Leaky Gut

Dr. Stoll...great site!

I'm suspecting I have LGS or candida as I've had elusive digestive problems going on a few years. I've read over many of the postings and articles and ordered several books you've noted including yours.

I've been struggling with my digestion for a while. I was on another program (www.hsu.com), gained some weight (that is good for me) and elimination started to work off and on, then it failed and shut down. I seemed to do better when I just had vegetables and started thinking fruits or bread set it off. I eat a whole wheat or sprouted bread (wheat may be a bad idea after reading this site), fresh and steamed vegetables, filtered water, potatoes, eggs, chicken, fish. Would seem to be a good diet, but after taking some acidophilus and bifidus, my system shut down completely. Usually at 3 large meals (another error maybe). Drink 80-130oz water/day.

I'm now trying to fight back to gain weight again as I've lost 10lbs, but I don't feel strong digestion and actually am losing weight in which I am already very light for my size. I don't have hunger feelings nor fullness feelings. My elimination system was recently shut down and doesn't function at this point. I suspect it will come back to a trickle. My tongue, post probiotics and other supplements, was an awful yellow/green color. It is getting slightly better, but far down I still see that color. That's enough bio for now...

Can you offer any advice on how to proceed? What you've described about LGS makes perfect sense. Maybe a 1 on 1 consultation?

Are supplements with cascara sagrada safe to take? There is a lot of information out (even on various links from this site) that is confusing or conflicting. Any advice on how to navigate it?

How can I diagnose what I have and figure out the approach to solving it?

Thanks for any help you can provide

You probably have both LGS and Candida. It seems like you are off to a good start. The probiotics can cause a change in bowel habits and can cause constipation or diahrea depending on what's going on.

I don't know exactly what you are now doing for your digestion but you might try the following if you haven't already. This worked very well for me and for others I have given this idea to:

1) Take plant enzymes with all meals (Therazyme is great)
2) Take HCL with protein
3) Practice food combining (No starch and protein at same meal = Protein/Vegetables or Starch/vegetables/fat
4) Stop probiotics. They will not help now. Take herbal antifungals and rotate them so you are only taking 1 remedy for 4 days and then switch to another one. You should use about 4 different herbs (garlic, volitle oils, berberine, Capyrilic acid for example)
4) Take some kind of fiber supplement in morning and night. A product that contains cascara sagrada may or may not upset your digestion. It's an individual response. It can be harsh though. I like pysllium, flax fiber, apple pectin, guar gum, and bentonite clay on occasion but you need to drink 2-3 liters of water a day which seems like you are. Take these fibers 2 times a day with a large glass of warm water.
5) Eat more warm-moist foods like cooked gluten-free grains, steamed vegetables (don't eat raw for now), Lentils and stear away from breads of all types (because they tend to be dry and constipating). Eat nuts/seeds and meats in moderation.
6) Take some kind of essential oils daily. flax oil is good. If you can find the oils by Omega nutrition, pick up Essential balance oils. It contains EFA's in the proper amounts

CONSIDERATIONS:
1) Low thyroid function can cause constipation
2) Hormonal imbalances can cause candida overgrowth
3) Candida disrupts the entire endocrine system
4) If you can't digest it, you can't use it (ENZYMES!!)
5) Practicing SR will start to heal your LGS while you treat your candida problem

The only way to know for 100% that this is your problem is to have testing:

1) Candida Antibody test (GS or immuno labs)
2) Comprehensive digestive stool analysis (GS)
3) Comprehensive parasitology (GS)
4) ELISA food allergy testing (From Immuno Labs only!!)
5) Intestinal Permeability Essay (GS)
6) Functional Liver Detoxification Profile (GS)

** these tests will give you an exceptional idea of what is happening right now

Hope that this information can be useful for you. I know what it is like to suffer such digestive ailments. You probably have some foods sensitivities that are preventing you from gaining weight. Also, pay close attention to the way you prepare foods. Grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes should be soaked, sprouted or leavened before eating (to improve absorption and minimize injury to intestines). Vegetables should be steamed (your gut may not handle raw foods). You might want to try taking some ginger juice. Look in the archives here for the ginger juice recipe. Peppermint is also very healing to the GI tract. Take it as tea or as peppermint oil caps. hope this helps you.

Hi, Kalf.

See the Health Coaching Protocol (HCP) to see if that is what you want.

I hate to recommend another book, but LGS discoveries are happening so fast now that everythinhg is out of date by the time it is printed.

Consider the new book edited by Dr Trent Nichols for many of the world's foremost researchers in this ares: "Optimal Digestion--New Strategies for Achieving Digestive Health". It was written for lay people. You can find out about it at www.fxmed.com Even this book, however, does not yet know precisely how to reverse the stress cause--as is described so cogently on this website.

Short of the H.C.P. you might start with serious SR.

Let us know what you learn.

Thank you for the thorough answer! I got a cook book on Candida and am following it and it highly mirrors what you are saying. Whatever is going on is a very challenging problem. Definitely my system is not functioning correctly. I'm going to start SR. I suspect I need a CD and some instruction, so I'll read up on that. I've already reduced my stress by turning off the tv and radio.

Is it possible to get these problems under control? Has anyone been successful? It is very easy for me to follow the diet. I've also heard a rotational diet can be helpful. Any perspective on that?

This always seems to happen at some point. Personally, I don't think you need to be as rigid as you might be with your diet right now. You can have gluten-free grains, beans, lentils, vegetables, eziekiel bread, berries, as well as the meats you are probably eating. The candida diet is not meant to be a ketogenic diet. If you are eating too much protein and not enough carbs and fiber, you can get constipated. Why not loosen up a bit and eat some more carbs. It won't cause the candida to grow out of control. Not if you are taking antifungals too. The fiber helps the candida move out of the colon. Many people have resolved candida without starving themselves of carbs ya know?

You mean "herbal fiberblend"? I have never used it but I heard that it tastes better than most. If you took just straight psyllium you would probably taste nothing. The herbal fiberblend however, is probably a good idea :)

Hi, Kalf.

Be assured that this approach works consistantly. The only problem is getting people to DO it.

Rotation diets can give one temporary relief of symptoms. However, since it is the LGS that is creating the environment that causes most food sensitivities, the elimination/provocation diet that leads TO the rotation diet will be a lot more worth the effort it takes AFTER the LGS is better.

Hope this helps.

Walt
