Appendix

Posted by Brianna on April 13, 2001 at 01:57:58:

Dr. Stoll, I posted a couple weeks ago about my fathers surgery. he is coming along splendidly, the incision is almost closed, and the nurses that come during the day to the house, his primary doctor, and the surgeon are all amazed how wonderfully the incision is healing and how well he is doing. Hes always led a good like, no smoking, drinking, and exercise, he's 77 looks 55. You were right about the catheter, as soon as it came out within hours he was urinating. He finished the antibiotic yesterday and his temeperature has been normal for almost a week, does this mean the peritonitis infection has cleared up, and can it return? Thank you for all your advice during this difficult time for him and me. I do have another question, any idea what causes an appendix to get inflamed? Thanks again, and I hope you are doing well.

Hi, Brianna.

Peritonitis likely gond for good. The only fly in the ointment is that his incision is not yet perfectly closed.

Dr Burkitt's theory (or Burkitt's Lymphoma fame) is that the most common cause is a low fiber diet with high refined carbohydrates. Since there is a genetic susceptibility component, this can happen very young or, in very resistant cases, very old.

In Africa, where he was a Missionary Doctor for more than 20 years, those who ate their traditional diet (high in fiber and zero refined carbohydrates) the incidense of appendicitis was zero. As soon as the natives began to eat the "white man's diet" the incidence of appendicitis zoomed to the same as it is in this country.

He was told by his surgeon and his visiting nurse that they've never seen an incision heal so well as he has, it is almost closed, he looks fabulous. He does eat a lot of fiber, but he likes the sweets, as so do I. Carbohydrates can cause appendix problems? Do you have a website where refined carbohydrates might be listed? I'd like to know what I should stay away from. Thank you
