Coeliac Disease and magnesium deficiency follow up

Posted by Melissa on April 14, 2001 at 16:36:23:

Dear Dr Stoll and All,
I made a recent posting about how to correct
magnesium deficiency when you have coeliac disease
(gluten intolerance) and following your advice I have
read the book 'Opitimal Digestion' New strategies for
achieving digestive health. The strategies are to heal
the leaky gut as well as removing gluten from the diet.
Although for the last two years I have been on a Gluten
free diet I still have a significant magnesium problem
that just seems to go on and on despite supplements
and a course of IV injections. After reading the book, I
am now taking L-Glutamine at a dose of 500mg daily
as taking more seems to make the magnesium
deficiency symptoms worse- more headaches, muscle
twitches/spasms and very tense muscles. I can't quite
understand why this is so - Any ideas? Also when I
take the probiotics as suggested this also has the
same effect. To heal my leaky gut I must try to continue
with these, it is a vicious circle that the better my bowels
are working the worse the rest of my body feels as
regards my muscles and joints. I would be grateful for
any advice.

Kind regards Melissa

Dear Dr. Stoll,
I contacted the Author, and he said taking the
L-glutamine was probably making my magnesium
deficiency symptoms worse. I should first correct the
magnesium deficiency by taking magnesium glycinate
(this is less likely to cause loose bowels than other
forms of magnesium ) and then once it improves to
take the glutamine again.

Thank you for your advice and I will continue to keep you
posted on my progress.

Best wishes
