Dear Dr. I have a disease called Diverticulosis, I cannot eat any seeds or nuts. I would like to start taking Flaxseeds. If I take ground flaxseeds will that be okay for my diverticulosis. If the seeds are grounded that shouldnt bother or effect diverticulosis. Please Respond George Malchow. Email malchow@mhonline.net

Hi, George
You might as well read through some of the archives on Diverticulosis, while waiting for Dr Stoll to respond. He responds after 48 hours. If link does not work, type in Diverticulosis into the search engine on top of this post.
Hope this helps

Hi, George -
Also, you should type in Diverticulitis in the Search Engine at the top of this page. It could be that you had an attach of diverticulitis, which is an inflammation of one of the diverticula on your intestines. If this is mild, a soft diet and rest will cure the attack. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to have antibiotics to cure it (this happened to me).
There is a diet given in the posts. Raisa

Hi, George.
You need a better doc. 40 years ago it was thought that a diverticulosis patient had to avoid roughage. NOW it is known that avoiding roughage is the CAUSE of the condition & being sure that you have enough roughage actually treats the condition.
IF you understand the condition--essential for managing it best--you know about the necks of these sacs and the fact that there is no longer any muscle surrounding it to express any chunks of food. Blockage of the sac can be a problem. You CAN have a problem with improperly chewed nuts or seeds IF the chunks are large enough to block the sacs.
Ground flaxseed is MUCH too small to do anything of the kind.
See the archives about colon problems and let us know what you learn.

If you don't want to use the seeds, you can buy flaxseed oil capsules. They work just as well.
