How to get nystatin?

Posted by Terry A on June 11, 2001 at 17:40:24:

I asked my doc to prescribe me nystatin since I have all the classic symptoms of candida overgrowth (plus having colitis). He refused saying it is an illegal use since it is not mainstream. He said if I could provide him with "acceptable medical literature" to back up my claim then he would consider. From conversations I have had with the doc I think he understands the non-traditional approaches, but is trying not to rock the boat. How do others get the perscrip? Can someone point me to acceptable medical literature. I have had a stool test done in the past that showed negative, but Dr. Stoll has stated that the test will only detect 1 in 10 and even GSDL will detect 1 in 5.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

II'm not a doctor but a kinesiologist; If you really need it then a holistic doctor would write you one, why not change doctors. There are natural things that can also help besides nystatin, although nystatin is very safe i feel i was on it for a year many years ago and no problem;

Hi, Terry.

This doc is like many others: more concerned about his income and ego than about his patient's welfare. There are absolutely no dangers from taking nystatin since it is not absorbed. It should not even BE on prescription.

Get a better doc. If you want to try to save this one, ask him for anything written that says that it is illegal. Watch him squirm. After all he asked you for research.

Please help me out here! My doctor prescribed me Nystan this morning and asked if I'd prefer pastilles or drops. I said drops. Now I notice that they say it should be on the tongue as long as possible and to swill it around the mouth. I find this impossible with one tiny drop of the liquid. Would pastilles have been better? Can I take them back to my chemist and ask for pastilles? What do you think? Also, can I keep taking acidophilous while taking Nystan? Thank you!

Hi, Lucy!

The only effective form of Nystatin for candida is the pure powder 750,000 units 4 times a day on an empty stomach. Any doc who orders pastilles or drops does not understand the problem. They are much too expensive and have a lot of sugar in them.

Since it is apparent that the prescribing doc has no idea, he might actually prescribe the powder mixed with talcum (for external use only). DO NOT get that.
