Intestive worked for me for IBS/LGS

Posted by Michelle S on August 14, 2001 at 00:06:48:

Hello everyone,

In the spring, I wrote a question on this BB asking about using Intestive for IBS/LGS. I don't think I received any responses, other than Dr. Stoll suggesting that I follow up with my results.

Well, Intestive worked wonders for me. After 6-8 months of bad IBS/LGS (and many years of having it to a lesser degree), I was very frustrated. I lost 15 lb in about 4 months, became weak, tired, dizzy, feverish, etc. I'd had the Great Smokies CDSA test and tried various treatments based on that analysis. Digestive enzymes would help a little but often give me diarrhea. Some fiber supplements gave me heartburn and gas. I hated leaving the house because my bathroom needs were urgent, frequent, and unpredictable.

After months of trying other treatments that might help a little, then stop working or even cause problems, I struck gold with Intestive. I started taking it in May and noticed feeling just a little perkier with less intestinal pain in a few days. I finally stopped losing weight and got back some energy to start walking for exercise again. I'd say that it was a few weeks ago, after perhaps taking Intestive for about 2 months, that I began to feel almost totally normal - I'd forgotten what it felt like! :-) I haven't had a bathroom emergency in over a month now!

BTW, I also went the traditional route through my HMO, had a lot of blood tests, and all my tests were within range and the GI doctor said I had classic IBS - fortunately, she actually treated me with a lot of respect - she didn't suggest therapy or prescription drugs! Her suggestions of watching fat, eating smaller meals, and taking Imodium A-D with questionable meals or perhaps when traveling, seemed very sound and I believe helped contribute to my well-being. She didn't know about Intestive but reviewed the ingredient list and said she didn't see any reason why I shouldn't continue to take it - probably about as good as an endorsement I'm likely to get from a mainstream doctor!

I just went on a vacation for the first time since last year. I am still careful about what I eat, but I can go out without panicking. I was able to go on hikes without worrying *too* much about bathrooms. I ate some Thai & Chinese food with no problems! I haven't had a bathroom emergency in probably at least 6 weeks now.

BTW, I also take Natren's Digesta-Lac (lactobacillus bulgaricus), for canker sores & digestive support, and Citrucel for a little additional fiber. But it was Intestive that made the dramatic difference. If you haven't had luck with anything else - it's worth a try - they offer a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Thanks, Michelle! I checked out that website and will probably order some. I think it is the colostrum that is doing the most good -- I took colostrum before and had a severe die-off reaction and felt better; but, I had to discontinue it a few days later because of severe psoriatic arthritis flareup (at that time I didn't know that I had allergy to milk!) -- that formula did not have caseine and lactose removed. Glad you found something that worked, and thanks for letting us know.

Thanks, Michelle.

Wonderful feedback! I will be interested in hearing from anyone else who tries this. MY previous experience with things like this is that they will work wonders for some people and not help at all for others.

I agree with you that it is worth a try!

Next, I hope you will share with us how you are doing in about a year. I am concerned that this may restore your healthy ecology but, you had a healthy ecology before this happened to you. If you do nothing about why this happened, it will recur.

Namaste`

Dr. Stoll,

I am totally with you on this. After spending many months being miserable, researching IBS/LGS, and analyzing my life, I think I have it pretty much figured out.

I didn't have IBS/LGS problems that I recall, until my early 20s. That's when I started taking antibiotics and decongestants/antihistamines/steroids because of chronic bronchitis for the better part of a couple years. I worked in an office a few feet from a 2-pack-a-day smoker...it was pure hell for me. Anyway, my IBS/LGS problems weren't horrible then, I just figured it was food allergy since my mom had allergies (apparently).

When I worked in a better environment, I had less respiratory problems. Still had smokers nearby, still occasional bronchitis, but not as serious. I think I was kind of status quo for 15 years or so, with occasional digestive problems but nothing serious or long-lasting.

I've had allergies for years, but not bad enough to warrant more than a little saline spray, decongestant, or an occasional Benadryl. But last year was a really bad allergy season for me. Last June I went to the Dr (first time for allergies) and was prescribed Allegra, which made me very nervous. So I tried Claritin - which made me sleepy, so I tried not to take it too much. Meanwhile I was taking Flonase the whole time. IBS/LGS got worse throughout the year. I didn't make any correlation, since I just felt bad all over. Then I found out about sinus irrigation and stopped taking meds. My acupuncturist explained LGS and I had the Great Smoky CDSA test done which showed some definite problems. Tried digestive enzymes but they didn't do much for me - sometimes seemed to help - but after awhile I think they made me worse.

Finally, I started Intestive in May (story is in a prevoius post). I recommended it to two friends with apparent IBS - one said it made her too nervous and didn't seem to help much (she's very underweight and nervous to start with)...but another friend said he noticed a difference (improved energy, better BMs) within a few days and was really encouraged, and ordered a few boxes.

So, the bottom line is that I don't take any meds anymore, except for a rare Tylenol for a bad headache or neck ache, but I try relaxation, massage, heat before I even do that. My thought is that once I stopped putting bad stuff into my body (and eating more whole foods), and doing SR, I stopped getting worse, but I needed something to heal the damage - which Intestive did for me.

Yes it's interesting how some things work for some people and not others. Lysine never helped me a bit with canker sores, but I know others that swear by it. I guess it just depends what's causing the problem?

Thanks to Dr. Stoll and all on this BB for the great ideas that everyone shares!
