Red and White Blood Cells found in abundance in my Stool Culture Tests

Dr. Stoll,
I was referred to you by many. Thank you.
I am a 28 year old female, three great children and a husband of ten years shape my life. Within the last month and a half my bowels have changed drastically. ( I have investigated your archives, they were of great assistance.) I feel like I always have to have a bowel movement, although a lot of the time, it is just blood and mucus-type consistancy, blood clots, gas and what looks to be peices of my movement. Occasionally, I do have a bowel movement that has shape. I was supposed to have started my period, I spotted, but never flowed. ( I am usually a healthy bleeder) and I am not pregnant, for my husband has had a vasectomy for the last 4 years and we are faithful. Because this happened around the time for my yearly pap I shared with my GYN these things, a rectal exam, (no visible or felt hemmroids found) we decided to have stool cultures done because 3 years ago I became extremely ill with two foriegn parasites in my digestive system that I took strong antibiotics for). Now these cultures came back parasite free, which worried me. And I had an abundant amount of red and white blood cells in my stool. What does this mean? Upon asking what this meant, the nurses said they didn't know and that is why they are sending me to a (excuse my spelling, please) gastrointerologist. That waiting list has an opening Dec. 3rd but my Dr. is putting urgency on that. So, here I am having a really hard time waiting for someone to talk with me or share their expierence or advice. I would be really grateful for anything. Do you have any advice on what I could or should be eating during this time? Because I am feeling as if I constantly visit my bathroom I have avoided foods hard to digest, like protien. Oatmeal is my friend, Oatmeal is my friend, Oatmeal is my friend......=)
Thank you once again,
Liane

Hi, Liane.

The worst thing that this could be is Ulcerative Colitis and it is an early case if it IS that. You might read up on it but don't get too scared since SR has been proven to be the solution to that. There are lots of prescription drugs to treat it BUT most do more damage in the long run than good. It definitely is SOME form of colitis and must be diagnosed properly.

You best bet would be to start SR immediately and be sure you get a colonoscopy and biopsy from the Gastroenterologist. In the meantime, LGS has to be present before any of this can happen. SO, becoming a student of LGS will give you a real leg up on whether your GE guy knows what he is talking about AND what you can do to help yourself.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Start with the glossary for any unfamiliar terms. Then go to the archives to get filled in.

Any other treatment, like probiotics, L-glutamine, etc., will get in the way of a proper diagnosis from the colonoscopy and biopsy.

Thanks, Liane.

Not until I know the exact diagnosis.

Walt
