irritable bowel disorder following colonoscopy

Posted by belinda on October 13, 2001 at 08:50:05:

Approx. 3 months ago I became extremely constipated.
This was TOTALLY ATYPICAL. In fact most of my life
I had suffered from wind, etc, never constipation.

After about 6 weeks of trying high-fibre and some laxatives
my doctor said I should have a colonoscopy to exclude
any more sinister posssibilities. One of the laxatives
I had used prior to the colonoscopy had caused incredible pain in the gut, which had half settled before the procedure.

The preparation for the colonoscopy involves taking a
VERY EXTREME LAXATIVE to totally clean the bowel. Nothing
adverse was found, but as soon as I tried to eat afterwards
I had terrible colonic cramping and pain.

The specialist recommended taking COLEFAC tablets to relieve
the spasm. However my own doctor said just "go natural"
and drink lots of peppermint tea.

ONE MONTH later, after trying to eat OAT BRAN, MUSELI,
etc, I have a full-blown case of IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME:
pain, cramping, wind, bloating.

I never had a real stomach ache in my life before the episode of constipation: now its there ALL THE TIME.

Another doctor said to try enteric-coated peppermint oil:
he's also given me a gluten-free diet to try and said
to avoid coffee, etc.

He's also suggested taking COLEFAC to try and reduce
the discomfort.

Has anyone else out there had this experience?

What can I do to go back to "normal".

Any answers greatly appreciated.
