Leaky gut program (modified)

Posted by Helping You on October 31, 2001 at 11:16:11:

Hi. I'm going to be a bit simplistic here but I am going to briefly go over what I believe is an overall effective way to handle LGS and other colon problems, especially colitis, IBS, IBD.

From your post, I can tell that you are on the right track. The SR is your long-term power tool to bring your gut back to life. The other things I am going to mention will also help in the long-run but seem to do a lot very quickly to help your progress.

The PD and PF is an excelent idea. If financial issues become a problem, I would suggest only PD for now. It will make the most difference. You want to work your way up to 6 ultrazorb caplets per day. If you find that after a few weeks of this that this is not makinga difference, you should work your way up to 12-15 caplets per day and maintain that for 3 months. For example, I got no benefit at 21 caplets but 22 caplets put me into remission with colitis/IBS. After 3 months, maintain at 3-6 caplets per day. Flora Source added at this time seems to bring further benefit. There are some strains in Flora Source that are not in PD. It contains 15 billion bacteria per capsule. Sometime, and I don't know when, there will be a product available that contains 500 billion organisms per capsule. I will keep everybody posted.

As far as diet, you are doing a great service to yourself by doing the whole foods diet. I would like to make this one suggestion---at first, you might try to consume a low or no grain/starch/lactose diet for a few months. There is a lot of evidence that certain sugars cause bowel problems in many individuals. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is one such example of a diet for intestinal problems that really works. It eliminates all grains, certain starches, and all lactose. People who go on this type of diet find that they have less gas, bloating, diarhea, and after 1-2 years, find complete remission of crohns and UC. IBS seems to clear up much sooner. At this point, "illegal" foods can be slowly introduced. This type of diet allows the small intestinal vili to heal and starves any bad bacteria you may have. PD takes this a step further so with the two, plus SR, you are accomplishing more than the average person. To keep weight on while you are on the diet, I would encourage you to eat more healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, nuts, and you can even make your own yogurt and kefir. Here is a great kefir shake that was given to me by a friend that was cured of stage-4 crohns disease with the SCD diet and Primal Defense. He gained 29 pounds having this shake 1-2 times per day:

8oz. homemade kefir from goat milk
2 raw eggs (use DHA-enhanced, organic eggs)
1 tbp. flax oil (use Omega Brand)
1 tsp. honey (use "Really Raw" brand)
berries (organic)
1 tsp. vanilla
stevia (for a little extra sweetness if you wish)

Grains and starches seem to put weight on people but they also cause blood sugar problems, mineral imbalances, intestinal problems, and these foods are generally not geared towards our physiology. On the evolutionary scale, we are still cavemen. We have the same genes as our ancestors who ate: fish, organ meats, game, certain fruits (mostly low-sugar), vegetbles (no potatoes, carrots, peas, ect.), nuts, berries. The only food that they would not have been able to use is Olive oil but the health benefits far outweight the fact that this didn't appear in their diets.

Lastly, there is one compound that I recommend for most people suffering from LGS. It's called L-glutamine. This amino acid is the most abundant in skeletal muscle and is the PREFERED fuel for the lining of the colon. Therefore, it can foster the healing of LGS simply by taking 10g per day. Take 3.5g 3x per day in water between meals. You can even take your PD at the same time.

After this program, have an intestinal permeability essay (lets say in 3 months). You shouldn't have LGS anymore. To maintain, do your SR, stay with the probiotics, stay with the whole foods diet (you can try adding healthy whole grains and starches if you wish but watch out for symptoms).

I hope this helps you. Keep in mind that everybody is different so no one program works exactly the same for everyone. You may handle grains and starches better than someone else. Or, you could be worse at it. It won't hurt you to try it this way for a month. If you do not get benefit from the diet in one month, you probably don't have a problem with grains and starches although I would still keep them low in the diet.

I had LGS REALLY bad about 5 years ago. I did the above program. I have intestinal permeability essays from before and after showing the healing of my colon. At the time, I didn't do SR and relapsed several months later. After including SR and re-doing the program, I remain LGS-free ever since. See, the program worked, even without SR, but not in the long-run. The rest of the program is what gets you results in 3 months instead of 6 months to a year but it is the SR that keeps you in long-term remission of LGS.

I hope this benefits you.

Thanks for all of the great information that you give us on this message board. I was wonder did you have multiple allergies before healing your LG and if you did, did they go away when your LG was healed?

Thank you so much. Again sorry I gave you trouble about the PD in the beginningI was angry that it seemed like I was having to start all over again. I feel I have renewed hope again since having found this site. It is truely a blessing that people like you continue to remain and help those of us who got lost and disenchanted with the present medical DEspot.Keep helping!!

YES!!! In fact, there were over 30 foods that I had varying reactions to but nothing serious. mostly fatigue, joint pain, GI symptoms. These hypersensitivites are created while you have LGS. You start to develop antibodies to foods very quickly. The key is rotating most foods, even after the LGS is healed. After the GI lining is healed, the hypersensitivities are no longer created very quickly but the allergies created while you had LGS still exists. So, even though your LGS is healed, you still have allergies. BUT!!!, rotating the foods will allow the antibodies to be removed against these foods within 6 months. After this point, your hypersensitivites should be eliminated. I can also tell you this, food reactions are still much less once LGS is healed. LGS can be healed EVEN if one does not give up the most allergenic foods but it definitely heals faster if you can identify the biggest trigger foods (for most people, this is one or two foods at most). Just know that even without LGS, people still create hypersensitivites although it takes years to develop them at that rate. The reason for it is the availability of the same foods over and over again all year round. Our anscestors took breaks from the same foods naturally through the seasons. So, the solution, in the long run, is to either eat by the seasons (kind of hard) or to rotate your foods so that you have more variety in your diet. This, I believe, is the healthiest way to eat anyway. I hope this helps you
