Does anyone know what if anything causes a white coated tongue? The allergist called it a geographic tongue and said it is because I breathe through my mouth. The internist said don't worry about it. But I wonder if this is due to candida, a bad stomach or some other cause that can be dealt with. It varies based on the day. Thank you.

I'd have it removed.

Very funny. I thought I'd get an intelligent response from someone in the know who would be able to say if this was indicative of something. So much for message boards.

It's true. It's probably candida.

Hi SS - You have a problem that could be serious if left untreated - if it's Candida it will only get worse and end-up causing you terrible health problems. Contact me at
(alternative.health@verizon.net) and I'll try to help you!

Here's a website with pictures on tongue characteristics. I think the approach is from a Chinese medicine-type perspective, but it may be helpful to anyone. I found the online quiz interesting and useful (my descriptions matched the diagnoses I got from my doctor & other sources), but I never went on to use the services offered there for treatment.
Hope this gives you some ideas. Welcome to the BB. Please ignore the occasional rudeness--it is rare. Most everyone here is very willing to share experiences and offer advice.

Thank you all so much for your input. Early today I was feeling badly about having posted a message and receiving what someone thought was a funny response. Health issues are not funny. I have a sense of humor as much as the next one, but after suffering with several issues over the past month, I thought I would give one simple issue a whirl on this site. The inciteful other responses provided should put me on the right track. I thank those of you who take these issues seriously and try to share information. My opinion about this board and faith in it has been restored. Nutmeg: those pictures are incredible and I will explore the other issues raised by the others. Thanks!

I'm mainly a mouth breather also ...
My tongue is white coasted more in the center with slight patches gone. I cant remember if it has always been like this or not.
I did a anti-candida treatment at one time; and I didnt notice my white coating on the tongue go away at all nor did I notice my asthma like symptoms improve.

Hi, SS.
I know of no research that shows that "coated tongue" is directly related to candida--------OTHER THAN THAT IS IS RELATED TO LGS AND LGS IS RELATED TO CANDIDA.
