New Here...Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Posted by Terry on March 12, 2002 at 01:55:34:

I think I may have IBS. Ive read the archives and info on the web but I do have a few questions. I dont have the diahrrea, but I do have the strainig, hard, lumpy stool, and urgency to defecate.
1. Can there be off and on gurgling for a day or more?
2. Can there be a low backache?
3. A very gnawing, heavy feeling below breastbone area?
4. Mild low abdominal pain that waxes and wanes?
Is there a way to tell one has IBS?

Hi,

I once had IBS. This is not really a physical ailement and it is usually a condition assigned after all else is ruled out. Here is my suggestion to anyone who has IBS. Don't waste any time. Go to a doctor, describe your symptoms, and the doctor will do whats necassary to give you a piece of mind that there is nothing physically wrong with you. Once you have the piece of mind, its much easier to deal with IBS, because the stress of uncertainty is not there. For me this was the stress that led to my IBS and I got into an infinite circle. IBS - stress - more IBS - more stress. I broke free when the doctor ran some tests and said nothing was wrong with me.

Hi,

Listen to tks. It's a good idea to have other conditions ruled out first, especially if you are over 40.

The cause of IBS is really LGS (Leaky Gut Syndrome) LGS is the basis for most digestive conditions. The symptoms that manifest are determined by your genetic makeup. For some, it's diarhea-predominant IBS, for others, it's constipation-predominant IBS and so on.

One thing that is clearly established, is that the brain/gut connection in people with IBS is on hyper-drive. One crucial step is to return this connection to as near normal as possible. This is done with SR as you should see in the archives. SR is the solution for chronic bracing. Chronic bracing is the CAUSE of LGS to begin with (Please see the archives for any unfamiliar terms). This should be started immediately and done twice a day for 20 minutes each.

One dietary change that seems to make a huge difference in IBS is the elimination of grains, starches, and lactose. These foods often upset a bacterial balance already out of whack. The premise of the diet is to eat non-starchy vegetables, meats/fish/eggs, certain oils such as olive oils, coconut oil, most nuts are usually ok in moderation but track your symptoms, and low-sugar fruits such as granny smith apples and berries. Yogurt CAN be consumed but it needs to be HOMEMADE and incubated at room temperature for 24 hours to pre-digest ALL the lactose. for more on this IBS-diet, go to www.mercola.com or www.google.com and type in "The Specific Carbohydate Diet". Grains, legumes, and starches are not necessarily BAD foods. These foods are just new to to the human diet (from an evolutionary standpoint) and these cause digestive problems for many people. However, these foods can be eaten in moderation if they are prepared correctly as to neutralize their anti-nutrients which cause the digestive problems. Buy the book "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. More about this book can be read at www.westonaprice.org. This should give you plenty of info.

Lastly, there is a SMALL handful of supplements known to benefit IBS. For info on them, go to www.google.com and type them in:

1. SeaCure = 2 caps 3x per day between meals
2. Primal Defense = as directed
3. Peppermint oil = as directed
4. Plant Enzymes (Omegazyme, Maximizer, Gammazyme are good ones. Be careful with Maximizer as it is STRONG!!
5. Ginger = can be taken as juice

Hi, Terry.

Welcome to the 'site & thanks for looking around before asking your questions.

There are now known to be at least 2 distinct kinds of IBS--one with diarrhea and one with constipation. Your best reference would be the book about "Optimal Digestion---" described in the LGS archives.

The answers to your questions are yes, yes, yes, yes and "kind of". IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion made by the appearance of the colon on xray, colonoscopy and the history.

What most physicians do not know, YET, is that all cases of IBS are first cases of LGS. There is a lot you can learn from the archives, home page and glossary about that.

Depending on your age, if you have not had a thorough examination to rule out other causes for this set of symptoms, you need to do so.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
