frequency of bowel movements

Posted by curious on March 25, 2002 at 01:08:49:

I have two or sometimes three bowel movements every day. My husband keeps insisting that this isn't healthy and that I'm probably not deriving all the necessary nutrients from food because it goes through too quickly. They seem fine to me and are well formed but he has me worried. Advice would be appreciated.

Sometimes I go 2 or 3 times a day, usually when I have to much fiber, or was constipated a few days, or just never emptied fully. I think 2 or 3 is normal.

Your hubby is wrong - if you eat 3 meals per day then you should have 3 bowel movements as well. Your bowels are constantly moving the toxins out which means you will not end-up with Colon Cancer - it's your hubby that needs to worry!

I read the entries on frequency of bowel movements with interest.

I have to tell all of you that you cannot assume that emptying your bowels' two or three times a day or more is normal or abnormal. That is to say you cannot generalise and give this advice.

What is always the case, however, is that if your bowel habits change suddenly, ie. you suddenly become constipated
and its lasts for a fairly long period, or you suddenly start going to or three times a day after only going two ro three times a week for example, then that is the time to have yourself checked out by a doctor.

Our bodies tell us in many ways when there is a problem and by alerting us to some sort of "change" in regularity, is one way. This applies to many health issues.

It is a fallacy to think for instance that if a person only goes two or three times a week, they are constipated. It depends if their bodies are happy with that and if it has been a constant situation. Conversely, if a person has had regular bowel movements two or three times a day, then that might be normal for them.

On that note too: Colonic Irrigation (which is really just an old fashioned enema) has become fashionable and can be potentionally dangerous for some people who have been told they are constipated by a practitioner because they do not empty their bowels on a daily basis.

Please always ask for second opinions before accepting anyone's advice or treatment to do with your bowel's. A lot of harm can be done with inappropriate treatment.

SHAPE 3 meals a day doesnt mean 3 BM's a day, who ever told you that????? LOL

It's deja vu all over again!

This very same thread has been posted before....

(play theme from twilight zone here)

What happened in the earlier thread?

I think SHAPE stuck by his guns, that one BM per meal is optimum.

But the concensus was that "normal" is an individual thing. As long as stool is well formed and not painful, and you're not feeling bad, don't sweat it!

Hi, Curious.

I would say that this was just fine. Your colon decides how often you will have bowel movements and the colon does not allow the absorbtion of ANY nutrients except a little vitamin K (PRODUCED in the colon) and water.

Half the present USA population would trade their bowel habits for yours any day.

Tell your husband to worry about something else.

Namaste`

Walt

Thank you Dr. Stoll and others for your responses. I am printing out Dr. Stoll's response for my husband to read. I have been worried about the absoption of nutrients issue and you've put my mind at ease. Dr. Stoll, I'm so glad I found your web site. You are greatly appreciated.
