Phlegm/mucus

Dear Walt,

Iíve had a chronic problem with phlegm or mucus since I was about 7 years old. I just have a constant stream of it. Iím constantly draining mucus down my throat and sometimes through the nose. Hot meals (well actually, most meals) seem to stimulate the nose drainage (steamy soup is a dramatic culprit) but I wouldnít eat without a handkerchief nearby. Itís not an allergic type of feeling with a stuffy nose, just constant drainage down the throat. The amount seems to fluctuate somewhat, but it never goes away. Iíve eliminated all allergens from my diet and donít think itís related to either food or environment. My parents both have/had a similar condition; my mother more from the nose, my father used to constantly spit.

I printed out the glossary from your web site (fascinating reading Ė why donít you make a book out of it?) and read the part about nose blowing with interest, because giving that up isnít an option for me. I couldnít live without a handkerchief in my pocket.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might provide about this.

Best regards, Happygal (Colorado Jan)

Hi, Happygal.

Now that your bracing is gone, your LGS will gradually disappear. IF your "phlegm" is abnormal it is almost certainly due to allergy and 95% of this type of allergy comes from LGS.

Normally, every human produces an average of a quart and a half of mucus/phlegm every 24 hours. I have described this useful protective mechanism thoroughly in the homepage article about colds.

You may have gotten into the habit of spitting it out rather than swallowing it by watching your parents before you had a chance to know better. A quart and a half would fill a lot of hankies!!!

SO, this may be normal but handled abnormally. OR, it may be abnormal and related to LGS.

Hope this helps.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Actually, I don't spit out the phlegm, I usually swallow it, but the amount produced by my body seems excessive to me. I do understand it is the body's cleansing mechanism but I don't have a sense that other people have the same kind of continual drainage that I do. I've had periods when it has been less and that feels normal to me, rather than the constant mucusy kind of feeling which is continual.

Actually it seems that there may be two issues here: 1) the quantity of phlegm (which is swallowed) plus 2) the stuff that continually comes out my nose requiring frequent use of a hankie. I also don't notice other people needing to clean their nose as frequently as I have to.

If both issues are due to LGS, it is encouraging to hear that the end of the bracing will cause the LGS to gradually disappear. How long is "gradually"? Two months, one year?

Hi, again, Happygal.

If you swallow it why do you need the handkerchief?

Did your mother teach you that it was impolite to sniff?

A quart and a half is a LOT of phlegm!!!!!!!!!

IF this truly IS abnormal in you, the LGS resolution (6-12 months) should resolve it.

However the same things that would resolve LGS would also tend to eliminate a nervous habit like this--expecially now that I have called it to your attention.

Hope this helps.

This IS a pretty common complaint.

Walt

Hi Walt, thanks for your answers.

Interesting that you called this a nervous habit.

Hankerchief is for the stuff that wants to run out my nose. Sniff? What a concept! Something new to try.

So 6 - 12 months to heal Leaky Gut, it's wonderful to have some hope that healing is possible.

Have a great day. -- HappyGal
