Gallstones or not

Posted by Pat Laney on August 16, 2002 at 09:41:01:

I have always been concerned that I have gallstones. Ive read the archives and a bit about them on the web. I'd like to know something. I ate yesterday 2 fried eggs in butterm 4 breakfast sausages, home fries cooked in oil and bacon. If a person suspected he or she to have gallstones, and if they did have them, wouldnt a meal such a this cause an attack? Or are people with gallstones able to eat a meal like this and not feel any repercussions from it.

Hi, Pat.

Gallstones are the end of a long process that starts with LGS. It is possible that one could really test out the system like you did without symptoms when they actually had gallstones.

Since you have read the archives you have a pretty good idea of what prevents stresses on the gallbladder. Why not do a few of them and stop worrying about gallstones?

I am glad Walt answered first. He is right, of course,
and more capable than I of being brief and to the point.

When I first read your question I thought that you were
perhaps looking for permission to continue eating fatty
foods rather than testing a theory. My goodness-talk
about a Breakfast of Champions! I can't help you with
that... : ) It sounds really yummy, but you know it's
really important to watch your diet anyway.

As a possible explanation for abdominal pain etc that
might lead your doctor to order an ultrasound to check
for gallstones, the symptom checklist includes what
happens to you when you eat a fatty meal, but that by
itself does not confirm or rule out gallstones. Some
people have gallstones and no symptoms or very mild
occasional symptoms. Often stones are found
incidentally during an imaging study for some other
condition. Some people are uncomfortable quite often
and are classic for the checklist. Some people have
one bad attack and that's it. And some people end up
in the ER and then go on to the OR!

They best way to avoid the uncomfortable symptoms
that can be caused by gallstones, if you have them, is to
adopt a low fat diet which we all know makes good
sense for other reasons, too. Right?

A question for you-if you knew you had gallstones what
would you do about it?

Walt makes good sense. It's not something worth just
idly worrying about, but I would also suggest you
continue pay attention to any symptoms that you do
have.

Once you have stones they are 'yours' and you may
have to have your gallbladder removed someday if one
slips into a bile duct etc. You could also live a long
comfortable life with your stone-laden gallbladder.

FYI-You can get along without your gallbladder, if you
have to, but that is not a good reason, by itself, to
electively have it removed either-in my opinion-in case
that question ever comes up. It's still surgery! Nor is it
an invitation to aggravate your health with consistently
poor food choices.
