I have been a drinker....rather heavy really going on about 6 years now. This I mean I say take in about 250ml of Alcohol...like whiskey a night. I dont drink through the day thatis. Just the evenings. Now how do i know if I'm doing bad myself or not, because I feel great in the mornings....no h'overs etc. But my friends say i'm looking for trouble.
Can anybody tell me....I'm 29 now and its been this way for a while.

Think about it this way.
What good is it doing to you?
What's the benefit of drinking?

Rob....my friend has been drinking for 10 yrs. straight. He drinks vodka. I'm sure he has cirrhosis of the liver without any doctor telling him so. His eyes (the whites) are very yellow and his abdomen is distended. Supposedly, he feels good, right now. He is always trying to diet and exercise to lose his gut but I want to tell him that it is an enlarged liver not a problem with overeating. I work for trauma dr.s and they say when they have a patient that drinks and has an injury to the abdominal area, they can always tell if he/she is a drinker because the liver is as hard as a rock. You're too young to have this kind of a drinking problem. Good Luck.

Hello,
My brother died at the age of 30 from liver failure. Was as healthy as a horse until he began drinking everyday.
You may want to make some life changing decisions while you still believe you can. Addiction can be a POWERFUL thing, and the line that can be crossed from social drinking to alcoholism is an invisible one.

Hi, Rob.
First of all, our bodies are made to keep us going, without symptoms, even though we may be seriously damaged. That is good, in a way, since that allows us leeway to survive.
However, the other edge of that double edged sword is that when the body finally gives up compensating the collapse is sudden. ALL chronic conditions work that way: heart attacks start 40 years before the person has any inkling, etc.
Next. you say 250 ml of alcohol. You know that 100 proof whiskey is only 50% alcohol. Do you mean 250 ml of whiskey or 250 ml of alcohol?

Last night was the first night of my life for probably 10 years that I didn't have a drink (other than when I have had 'flu or some other illness). I drink about 4 glasses of wine each night (every night) and I was getting worried that my body is taking a battering with no let up. I am addicted to alcohol but not so much that I need to drink during the day. However, I have now decided no drink on week nights - only weekends. How long will it take for any damage I may have done to recover. Will my liver go back to pristine condition?

Hi, Me.
IF your liver has already been damaged (likely) [you could find out by getting the true liver function tests in the liver archives--not the liver death tests most docs know how to order] you will have to be a teetotaler for about 6 months to allow it to heal. Then you could do the weekend thing with little risk.
Hope you will be able to do this. Liver failure is one of the worst ways to die that I know of.
