Question for Dr. Stoll or Bob McFerran

Posted by Robin Pollan on November 17, 1998 at 23:12:54:

In the summer of 1993 I started having what I know now was IBS along with heartburn. One Monday in mid-August of the same year I came home from work, I had just worked out for about 45 minutes and I felt fine (I got home around 8:00pm), I laid on the bed to talk to my mom for approx 2 hours. I noticed when I tried to get up I was very stiff and achy and had a headache, I took my temp and it was 102.
The next few days it grew steadily to 105.3 which was taken in the e/r. They told me I had the flu. I went home and I did not get better, I was also jaundiced and was tested for Hepatitis A,B & C and Epstein Barr all which came back negative. Well, the "liver virus" went away but I was left with a excrutiating pain in my right side which I later found out was a duodenal ulcer and have had 2 since along with alot of heartburn and IBS. I have now determined that I have LGS and Candida and am here trying to resolve this.

I have never gotten a satisfactory answer as to what this "liver virus" might have been. An infectious disease doctor told me that there are alot of unknown viruses out there that they cannot identify or test for. Is this all I need to know? or is there more?

I also have another question: I was out Friday night and had 2 beers (which I know I am not supposed to have, but I cheated, this was the first alcohol in over 7 months) within an hour I was totally bloated up and very uncomfortable, my heartburn came back with a vengeance and I had really painful hiccups about 6 different times. Needless to say, I will not be doing this again. Do you know what could cause this reaction?

Sorry for the long message.

Thanks for all your help now and in the past (both of you),

Robin

Time to switch to Johnny Walker!!!

I have a similar condition, not so acute as I never had ulcers to my knowledge. I believe mine was set off by a period of taking antibiotics for root canals that didn't work. I believe this killed off the good bacteria, allowing the candida, etc to flourish. I've somewhat recovered now after using some of the anti-candida diet techniques.

As I also have arthritis, I'm trying to learn the skilled relaxation, but not having much success. Can't tell if I'm getting there.

I never drink beer any more!! Scotch is OK. I think the distilling process removes the yeast and fungus or whatever - just my speculation. Wine I'm not sure about. Seems to cause me some discomfort sometimes, but not as much as beer.

Any comments Walt/Bob?

Thanks.

Robin,

I'll let Dr. Stoll comment on the 'liver' virus.

Your trouble with beer doesn't surprise me. You've got grain and brewers yeast along with alcohol to speed the absorbtion. You got to witness the results firsthand.

I can't really say that any alcohol is really 'good' for anyone. The healthier I get the less I can tolerate it. Gerry probably has the right idea -- distilled spirits would probably work better.

Since I am sensitive to ALL grains and very sensitive to brewers yeast I go with straight tequila AFTER or with a meal -- never alone.

When I'm out with my drinking buddies I usually go with the water -- Perrier or out of the tap. They don't seem to mind a bit...... :)

Bob

Dear Gerry,

Biofeedback testing is the only way I know of to be sure you are doing successful SR. See my note about it on the homepage of this 'site.

Since this is the one critical piece of your puzzle, you should be putting all your efforts there till is is yours. THEN focus on the next.

Any ideas about my "liver virus"??? I am just curious as to what caused this because I was deathly ill.

Dear Robin,

As your conventional docs told you, there are many viruses out there that will effect the liver. There still are!

If you are over that one, the very best thing you can put your mind to is getting healthy enough that the next one will not get you worse. Any time you put into the past episode is time better spent preventing the next one.

Walt
