clarification of abbreviation of LDH/SGPT/SGOT

Posted by Sabine on August 10, 2000 at 12:49:42:

Dr. Stoll,

thanks for your further reply and recommendation on what to do in case it is myocarditis. One more question though:

Could you please tell me what LDH, SGPT and SGOT mean?

Never heard of them, couldn't find them either.

Grateful Sabine

Hi, Sabine

Unable to ansewr for Dr Stoll, however, believe you need to obtain a copy of your medical records from your doctor. This would include any pathology reports. If you had the reports, believe you might know what those initials meant.

I copied each set of initials and pasted them to google.com and came up with the following in the event you might want to review . Not even certain this is what Dr Stoll was referring to, however, it's interesting information.:-)

Hope this helps some.

Take Care Of Yourself

Paulette

Hi Paulette,

I've copied all the test results from my doc and couldn't find anything like LDH/SGPT/SGOT on them. But now I know what they stand for and can ask the doc about it. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out right away.

Sabine,

These are standard liver "death" tests. Read about this in the archives about liver. LDH stands for lactic dehydrogenase, SGOT stands for serum glutamic oxylate transaminase, SGPT stands for serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase. Now does that clarify anything for you?

These are very common enzymes that are in liver cells. If the cell dies, the cell membrane can no longer keep it in the cell so it escapes into the blood where the test will find it.

Walt

clarified, thanks

Dr. Stoll,

Yes, it clarified for me what those abbreviations stand for that you were telling me earlier could be important for me to have tested.

Thanks

Sabine
