Walt,
While surfing the net re:"dead liver cells," I came across your response to Susan regarding getting the REAL liver FUNCTION tests that show SICK cells, not just dead ones. I don't know what is wrong with me yet, but my total bilirubin is 2.6 mg/DL, SGOT 677 U/L, SGPT 390 U/L and Alkaline phosphatase 172 U/L. I'm having a CT w/contrast Friday. However, I'm wondering what tests show SICK liver cells? All my other tests were normal. I do NOT drink, don't and never did do drugs, and am kinda scared right now. I suggested the alpha1-antitrypsine, but doc says my levels are too high for that one because it affects mainly the lungs (I have severe asthma, my son has severe emphysema). Hepatitis tests are being done now but I don't know how long it takes to get results and maybe it's too soon. These tests spiked suddenly.
Thank you.

Hi, I had hepatitus a few years ago and experienced quick jumps in all of my liver function studies as well. I am not saying that this is what is wrong with your liver but there several things that can cause a swelling of your liver.(hepatitus) For example chemicals can cause it wether you exposure was ingested or inhaled. My experience wasn't that great with it but I will say this. Stress is the biggest part of what made my problem last longer than it should have. Take care of your whole self try and eat low fat foods and listen to your doctors on what the diagnosis is. And then go get a second opinion. I know that when a problem shows up with a vital organ it can be scarry to say the least but your best bet is to practice relaxing and drink plenty of water (pure) water while you discover and deal with your problem. I found that during my hepatitus that water diet and as much exercise as I could get (not too much) was finally helpfull. I hope this helps and remember that I am only relating my experience. I hope this helps you and god bless. pete

Hi, Judy.
Listen to Pete (Thanks, Pete.)
The best lab in the country for true liver FUNCTION tests has gone out of business. Right now the only one I know of is Great Smokies Labs. at (800)522-4762. Ask them for a list of physicians in your area who use their services and who would know about true liver function tests and how to interpret them.
Your present results are serious.
Let us know what you learn.
