My roomate is and has been a heavy drinker for many years. Lately she has been seeing bruises on her back. They are located mid-back to lower back. Any idea what may be causing this? Note: these are not bruises from being struck or falling.

Hi, Jan.
I would be suspicious that they were from someone beating her. This is a very common place for such beatings and the kind of people she would be associating with, when she is drunk, are the kind who would administer such trauma. SHE would never admit this to anyone.
The only other possibility is that this is back pressure from liver cirrhosis and that is an end point with alcoholics.
IF you are convinced that she is telling you the truth about drunken beatings, she needs to get a liver evaluation ASAP. It is remotely possible that her awareness of liver failure MIGHT be the thing she needs to get out of this hole.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging.
Let us know what happens.
