QUESTION for Dr. Stoll- Gallstones (FREAKING OUT)

Posted by
Alexis on August 08, 2001 at 13:16:17:

Just got diagnosed with Gallstones (8/7) after a sonagram.
Of course my G.I. Guy wants me to have surgery.
Have only had 3 attacks so far, and I am worried about ending up worse off w/o my GB;

I have read many posts on an IBS BB from people who had the surgery and they ended up with a whole new set of problems, i.e. chronic diarrhea!!
Is is possible to live (safely) with stones, with a radically modified diet to minimize attacks?

BUT--- don't want to end up in an emergency situation if I DON'T have the operation.
With this just happening 3 times so far, is there anything else I can do in leiu of surgery?
Should I get a hidascan to determine what level of functionality my GB and then decide? Sorry if I am asking too much. I am really really scared.
(I had one operation 10 years ago and it was a disaster...)

Thanks in advance,

Alexis

Hi Alexis,

Please see my responses to Stevee and Lynn E. about Gallbladder/Liver flushes. Also, check out the archives by typing the subject in the search box above.

Good luck.

Hi, Alexis.

What did you learn from the liver archives? Have you tried the gallbladder flush for present symptoms?

Dr. Stoll,

I read about the flush.. Then I mentioned it to my G.I.; he never heard of it- I explained it and he just laughed and told me it could be dangerous- "Yes, olive oil will constrict the gall bladder", he said; but things could go wrong and peritonitis could result.

I accused him of trying to scare me away from alternative treatment and he said that was NOT an alternative treatment, (maybe he meant by Western Medicine terms).

I'm at my wits end as to what to do.
From the archives I learned that sugar and caffeine are big "No-no's" if you have gall stones. I did not/ do not have a high fat diet; so it's not from that. (5'6", 120)
My Mother had her GB out in her 30's. I'm inclined to think this is a heritary thing?

Dr. Stoll, in your medical opinion, can a person lead a normal life and eat a normal diet after removal of the GB?
Is it possible to live with the attacks if they are infrequently?

I'm taking a "wait and see" stance. I have not had an attack in almost a month-- and until and unless the attacks become chronic and frequent I'm not having surgery.

Is this a good plan? Thank you so very much....

Stevee

P.S. I hope you made it safely through the floods last week.
I thought about you there in Panama Beach!! ~ SN

Hi, Alexis.

I live in Panama City--not Panama City Beach. PCB is about 20 miles west of us. Here in PC, we got about 2 inches of rain and NO wind at all.

Since I learned about the gallbladder flush and how to prevent stones, I have only had one patient in 10 years go to surgery (& she was the one who would not do what I suggested). Until then, the first 15 years of my practice, I sent an average of 5 patients a year for gallbladder surgery. That means that at least 50 patients out there still have their gallbladders who would not have them if they had been going to a purely conventional physician like yours. No wonder they took my license!

I always have to laugh when the all-knowing conventional doc (who KNOWS he is all-knowing since he makes so much money) feels he has to give an opinion whether he knows anything about something or not. This doc has no idea what he is talking about and still expected you to pay for the information. Only in America!!!

You are going to have to learn enough that YOU are the expert and, THEN, you will know who to believe.

You likely DO have a genetic susceptibility to this problem. That does not mean that you have to have the problem!

Currently, the human genome project has determined that only 20% of such susceptibilities are due to the gene and the other 80% is due to what we DO with our genes (lifestyle). I will bet that your doc doesn't even know that. Watch his eyes glaze over when you say that to him. Docs are real good at covering though (we are taught how to do it in a special class in medical school), so he will quickly say something to cover the fact that he has not a clue about genetic research.

It is easier to live a normal life WITH a gallbladder than after it has been removed. MY bet is that you will have no more symptoms after a simple flush. THEN, if you deal with WHY you have this problem, You never will have a recurrance.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

As always, thank you for your time and expertise, Dr. Stoll.

I am planning to try the flush and will definitely get back
to you with my experience.

Sincerly,

Alexis/Marin County, CA

P.S. Glad the storm bypassed you!

Hi Walt,

You're actually taught to lie to patients?

Unbelievable!
