swollen lymph nodes neck/jaw

Posted by jeff on July 22, 2003 at 09:41:45:

I have had swollen lymph nodes one the side my neck & one under the jaw for about 2 months now? The way I got it was from a cold. I did not have any fever. Are these nodes going to go away. I never had lymph nodes from having a cold and I have had worse colds than this one. I touch the lymph nodes ocassionally but from reading about lymph nodes I see that I should refrain from touching it. Also the doctor I went to see gave it a good squeeze a couple times. ARE MY LYMPH NODES GOING TO GO AWAY???

Hi, Jeff.

Stay away from "squeezing doctors" and do not touch it for at least 6 weeks. THEN, let us know what is happening.

Dr. Stoll, what is strange to me is that I never had a lymph node swell from a cold in my life and I have had worse colds. How can you tell if it was a viral or a bacterial or (whatever) infection? The doctor gave me antibiotics. Does squeezing on a swollen lymph node really cause the lymph node not to shrink? Is there anything I can do besides not touching it to shrink it? I know people have worse problems but my swollen area is kind of visible and bothersome!!!

Jeff,

In my opinion, all physicians know that antibiotics are the least likely thing to help a swollen lymph node but writing the script takes the least time and gets you out of the office so they can charge you and get to the next victim.

If you would take the time to read the archives you would know that touching nodes is perhaps the most common cause of their persistance.

Nodes enlarge as a protective mechanism and that is normal.

Dr. Stoll,
1. So there is no way of telling what caused the
infection...bacteria, virus, fugus, ???.
2. Is there anything I can do besides not touching the
lymph nodes for it to go back to normal size?
I have been eating healthy, doing some cardio, & taking
vitamins B & C which I know is good for my overall
health. I have read on one of the posts to use Cleavers Combination. I don't know where to get it or if I should use it.(http://askwaltstollmd.com/archives/lymph/13457.html
3. So how about shaving. Putting shaving cream on and
shaving over the lymph nodes with a razor means touching
it right?
4. Should I go see an ENT? ENT doctor will probably touch/squeeze my lymph nodes, Do I tell a doctor not to touch my lymph nodes? I feel like I never recovered from the cold that I got 2 months ago and have remnints of the infection still in me. I can get mucus from the roof (between the middle and back of the roof) of my mouth.

I am in my twenties by the way if that helps you with anything.
Thanks for your responses Dr. Stoll.

Jeff,

In order of your questions:
1. Yes there is but it is very involved, not very accurate and you would not want to do it.
2. Start checking, and recording, your temperature 4 times a day and let us know what is happening. If you have no fever, you can safely wait till hell freezes over for a diagnosis. If you ever have to look into it that graph will be of inestimable value to any caring doc.
3. Shaving over and washing over is a far cry from feeling nodes to see if they are still enlarged.
4. If you can restrain yourself from going back to the doc more than every 6 weeks, his examination will be a necessary evil.

2. I do not have a fever. I just don't understand why the roof of my mouth is tender like i have a light cold. what about Cleavers Combination mentioned in a post? http://askwaltstollmd.com/archives/lymph/13457.html

just wondering...what makes you want to give medical advice to strangers on the internet???

Hi, Jeff.

I had to give up a $300,000/year income to do this. I have dedicated my life to stopping the allopathic monopoly, that took my right to treat my patients more effeectively just because it threatened that monopoly.

i see, it is a good thing you are doing granted that you are who you say you are!!!

And as far as question #2
2. I do not have a fever. I just don't understand why the roof of my mouth is tender like i have a light cold. Do yo know why that would be? What do you think about using Cleavers Combination mentioned in a post? http://askwaltstollmd.com/archives/lymph/13457.html

Jeff,

You do not need a fever for a temperature graph to help the doctor make a diagnosis.

Weird thing is im not sick at all and normally mine only swell when I am sick. I see the situation you are/were in. But Im wondering, what could my situation be? Hi, Sean.

If you will take the time to go to the archives about this, you will soon learn that antibiotics for a swollen lymph node is the least likely approach to have any effect.

Let us know what you learn.

I have had a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck for about 6 weeks. I have had every test in the book because I was panic stricken. I had blood tests, a sonogram to see it wasn't an anuarysm and a cat scan of the neck. All were negative. The cat scan said that it was a swollen node and the nurse said sometimes it comes from being run down. I also had a very bad cold about six weeks ago. I am very stressed out about this swollen gland and sometimes I feel a sensation run through my neck to the collarbone. It almost feels like a tightening or a muscle problem. I have been under a lot of stress lately and wonder if this is from depression. I do still touch it and it doesn't seem to be going away. what else can I do//???

Missy,

Perhaps this observation might be of help to you. Stuff like this goes on inside our bodies ALL the time but, because we cannot see them or feel them they go away all by themselves.

In my opinion, all of the lymph node posts, so far, have been precipitated by anxiety and not by any real cause for alarm.

If this were me, I would stop touching them and see if they are more enlarged in about 2-3 months. If they are, THEN you need to have them checked again. By continuing to touch them you are delaying any meaningful diagnosis.

Let us know how you do.

I noticed two swollen lymph nodes yesterday morning. One on my lower neck and one right behind my ear. Today, I noticed a couple more. I went to my ENT and we recorded almost about thirteen of them, and I have found two more this evening.(They range from behind my ears down to my collar bone-not sure about other areas but I will inspect tonight). She said she wasn't sure what it was exactly (she explained that was probably infection, blah blah blah). The funny thing is - I feel great. She wanted to prescribe two different antibiotics, which I graciously declined. I said I would rather get to the source of the problem before I treat something that might not be there. I have done some research on the web, and have found multiple possibilites for this symptom. Why wouldn't she have wanted to dig any deeper? Is this many swollen nodes normal? I'm going to get a second opinion in a couple of days, unless the swelling subsides. Any thought on the matter?

Hi, Jessica.

It is interesting that the "knee jerk reaction" of nearly all docs is to prescribe antibiotics when this happens when they RARELY make any difference!

In my opinion it is to get the patient out of the office so the doc can get on to the next patient (fee).
