Lymph Nodes!

Posted by Grace [4800.1351] on September 27, 2006 at 22:54:33:

Dr. Stoll,
Please help me out.. I'm freaking out a bit. I have some swollen nodes under my jaw that I just noticed. They are right under the jaw line.. you can't see them, you can only feel them if you press down but they are definitely enlarged (one is grape size, the other is smaller but I never noticed it before). They are a bit sore and tender when I push at them. I have a current "infection" of some sorts on my bottom gumline, on the same side as the swollen glands. I am not sure it is an "infection" but I think I might have overflossed in that area a few days ago, and since then my gums have been inflamed, red, and sore in that area. Does this sound like an "infection"? It's been hard to eat on that side. I know I have a cavity there too but the pain doesn't really come from the cavity, it comes from the gums.

Anyways, I just wanted to know what you thought, if you think that the red gums is what is causing the swollen glands under my jaw. I'm worried!!! By the way, the one behind my ear seems to be getting smaller.

Thanks. Grace

Hi ya Grace :-)
you never seem to be rid of those darn swollen lymph nodes, do you??!!

ever try half peroxide & water, and let it stay in your mouth for about 10 min., if you can (when the little ones are napping!).....

might help the node as well as the cavity.........

take care,,,
Jayne

Thanks, Grace.

This is a normal response of your immunity to any gum disease in your lower jaw.

Hi Grace,

... and you need to think about seeing the dentist or hygienist about the gums.

Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll try it.. I might try salt and water too.
This morning, my gums are so much better. Last night I did more flossing and there was a bunch of stuff in between two teeth where I'm having a lot of the redness. And then I brushed again, and this morning the swelling has gone down so much and the area isn't throbbing like it was last night. It seems as though the nodes are less sore today too, but one of them is still enlarged slightly, more than i'd like it to be.

Thanks Dr. Stoll,
I figured it must be normal, but I can't stand the waiting game with lymph nodes b/c I worry it's something else.

My gums are actually much better this morning. LAst night I flossed the area again, and then brushed and it must have gotten any excess bacteria out of there b/c the swelling has gone down and the throbbing is no longer there either. The glands are less sore but I can still feel at least one that is enlarged slightly.

For all nodes, the same applies right? No touching for at least 6 weeks and it should go away???

Thanks for all your help.Grace

Thanks Jan,
I do have an appointment in about 2 weeks.. wish it was sooner. I am not a regular flosser by any means, and I'm not getting younger. So I know I have to take better care of my gums.

Thanks, Grace.

You know that even without touching nodes, enlarged from something like this, might still be enlarged for 6 weeks after the cause is gone.

Drea,

How often do you check it to see if it is getting smaller or larger?

Always, it hasn't changed at all. I went to the Dr. when it first showed, and he told me it will eventually go away, its nothing to be concerned about. Well that was 4 years ago and its STILL HERE. After doing some reading I realized he didnt know what he was talking about when he said "theres nothing anyone can do it will go away on its own or not at all" Because in fact it can be drained or sergically removed. Im nervous now and am trying to find another Dr. or if u know how to make it go away, that would help!!! Anything will help at this point.

Thanks, Drea.

You did not answer my question. This CAN happen anytime a node enlarges to help improve local immunity!

However, if that is the reason, removing it at this stage is the only option--and then only for cosmetic purposes.

I did answer, I said "always" meaning, I always check it. It never changes in size. Was that the question? Im sorry that's the only question i saw. It hasnt changed one bit. So, your saying the reason could be because of local immunity meaning there could still be an infection that Im not aware of? Let me ask you, I have sinus infections quite frequently, could this be the reason? I am going to the Dr. but I couldnt get in till next week and Im sure u can understand Im very nervous. When u say this CAN happen, does that mean it can just remain enlarged for no reason? blocked etc.? Thank you for your patience with me. Im just trying to understand.

Thanks, Drea.

If you will check the archives about this you will see that by far the most common cause of persistant enlargement of lymph nodes is just the individual compulsively checking them. Keep your hands off it for 6 months and let us know what happens. It will be smaller if this is the cause. It may take a couple of years (without touching) to get as small as it can get. There MAY be some residual scarring--eee below.

The second most common cause of persistant enlargement is scarring. In that case, not touching it for 6 months will do nothing except that it will not enlarge in that period of time. Now you know it is scarring and you can have it removed for cosmetic reasons or let it be there. Remember that any scar in that area may be as bothersome, cosmetically, as the lump is now.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks, Drea.

Just washing over it is not a problem. Feeling it to see how IT is doing is the problem.
