Could This be the REason for my Deep Sleep

Posted by Bliss on November 01, 2003 at 19:51:44:

Yesterday, we bought a shiatsu electric massager.

It is the best massager i have EVER tried. We picked up at a new age festival we attended yesterday. Basically, it differs greatly from your standard electric massagers. It doesn't have that horrid vibration feel to it. It has two prongs that massage just like a persons fingers would. You would swear you were getting a massage from a masseuse!

I used it last night for about 15 mins on the different areas on my back. It put me into a sleepy state. It was about 11.30pm,when I got to bed, and I had the deepest sleep I have had in over 2 weeks at least.

My sleep hasn't been the best lately, but noticed a huge difference in quality of sleep last night.

Could it have been this new massager that did it? Granted I had a very long day yesterday, and not much sleep in the last few days either.

Hi Bliss,

I think that one of the things that we have overlooked here is the benefits of hand held massagers. A good one can work wonders for relaxation. What model are you using?

Be well,

Sounder

Possibly. Try it again and see what happens!

Shiatsu massager.

It's called Pro-Shiatsu portable massager through Jimac Promotions in Broadbeach, queensland. portable massager It has a kneading action of a masseuse, rather than a vibration action
It has 2 settings/speed. One is fast, one is slow. One goes up in anti clockwise circles,a nd the other in the opposite direction. so you can choose which one you prfer.I prefer the slower setting. You basically can start at your neck area. so it sits on the couch behind your head, and as u move forward, it moves down your body to where you want it. Its brilliant, sounder!

It cost 269 dollars.

Sounder

basically, the harder you lean back into it when you are sitting on a chair or couch, the deeper the massage.

I am going to do that tonight after we get home, Happygal.

The thing is I have been getting to bed quite late the last week, but for some reason kept waking in the early hours of the m ornning, and never got the opportunity to go back to bed, so by the time the late afternoon comes around, i am floundering.

have you noticed much difference in your sleep when you get a massage?

Hi Miss Bliss,

There are times, after receiving massage, when I sleep very very well. And other times, when I don't. With me, there are many factors that affect sleep.

If you're going to sleep very late, you might be waking up early because your nervous system is overstimulated.

I hope you have peaceful sleep soon and sweet dreams!

Best wishes,
Happygal

You hit the nail on the head, Happygal.

That is half my problem with sleep is that I DONT get to sleep most nights before midnight.

It's also my schedule, and not by choice, that I get to bed so late.

I know getting to bed early is the way to go, but it's unrealistic for me. I would have to cut back in too many areas of mylife, and I am just not willing to do that right now.

"If you're going to sleep very late, you might be waking up early because your nervous system is overstimulated"

Can you explain what you mean by my nervous system is overstimulated by going to be so late?

Thanks, Happygal!

Hi Miss Bliss,

"If you're going to sleep very late, you might be waking up early because your nervous system is overstimulated"

Can you explain what you mean by my nervous system is overstimulated by going to be so late?

I'll try. Your nervous system is getting so much stimulation, it loses the ability to stay relaxed. If you go to sleep earlier, which means it gets less stimulation, it calms down.

It's kind of like hitting a gong with a mallet. The mallet causes the gong to vibrate. If you keep hitting the gong, it keeps vibrating, and the vibration continues even after you stop. Your gong (nervous system) is vibrating so much by being hit so much, it won't stop vibrating. You get a little break when you first fall asleep, but then it starts vibrating again in the early morning by itself, just because it's so used to vibrating all the time.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you don't catch what I'm trying to convey.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Yes Happygal, this is so true. The more you can relax and sleep, the better you will continue to relax and sleep in the future. I used to have a crippling sleep problem, and i could not go to sleep before 3 and i would often wake up after only 5 hours, unable to return to sleep. No matter what I had going on the next day, I would wake up hours before I needed to. For instance if I needed to be up at 9:30 I'd wake up at 7:00. If I needed to wake up at 7:00 I'd wake up at 5:00. The way I beat these sleep problems was by going to bed at 8 or 9 every night. This caused my brain to treat 11 or 12 as "very late", whereas before this was "early". Also it meant that even if I woke up at 4:00 or 5:00 I still had had a good night's sleep. Eventually my body learned to relax until I was waking up closer to my needed wake-time, and I was falling asleep very easily at night. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.
