Hello everyone,
I found that my bracing was so severe that not only did I need to do SR, but I also needed to do daily full-body stretching (about 2-1/2 years, receive deep tissue massage to break up long-time restrictions in the tissues, and take certain nutritional supplements. I'm currently getting rolfed, too. To say the least, my body was a bracing mess after so many decades of stress!!
I have just come upon another step in the healing which I think may be applicable to many of you. It is abdominal massage. You see, even after all of the above, I continued to have digestive issues from bracing my gut. I noticed that I become upset easily and clench my abdomen when I do. My naturopath suggested I massage my ileocecal valve, but I went ahead and did the entire large colon, small colon, and the whole abdomen. I did this once a day for a few weeks. The temporary result was diarrhea during that whole time. However, a few days after I stopped doing the massage, my colon really started working better. I think that it simply needed some massage, just like the rest of me did. Oh, also, I am really working hard on not becoming upset by things. It's just not worth what the tensing does to my digestive tract!!
Below is a link to a great website telling how to do the abdominal massage. I hope this helps some of you!
Best wishes,
Jan

Jan,
Thanks so much for the info. Have you noticed a gradual improvement of the bracing from all this? Is the bracing completely cured? Just wondering how the improvement progressed, and when you really started to notice a difference. I plan on implementing your suggestions.

In 2003, I had a LOT of intestinal issues; and that was (ileocecal valve massage and the entire left abdominal area) was the ONLY thing that resolved it.
I make sure to do my yoga asana's which focus' on this area now, when I feel I may be under stress - also, Fish Pose is very good for this area, as if Frog.
Isn't it amazing what the body does? ...in stress AND in healing?!

Jan,
I guess I'm wondering if it took 2 1/2 years to see improvement (you had mentioned that amount of time for stretching), or did you start seeing gradual improvement right from the start.
Thanks so much,
Sapphire

Hi Dr. Stoll,
Are there any organs or glands we have to be careful to NOT put pressure on in the abdomen during an abdominal massage?
Thank you,
Sapphire

Hi Sapphire,
Actually I started stretching long before I learned about SR. The stretching helped a lot, but it didn't do the whole job. The SR provided a different part of the relaxation than the stretching.
I actually started stretching because I was getting massages and I would tighten up again very shortly afterwards. Deep tissue massage didn't have a permanent effect until AFTER I had done stretching for a while, plus SR for a while.
I saw gradual improvement from continuing to stretch every day. I saw gradual improvement from continuing to do SR every day. I saw gradual improvement from getting massage on different body areas that felt tight and restricted. It opened them up, one area at a time. Adding the nutritional supplements brought even more relaxation. Everything kept adding up.
Now, about 4 years after I first started stretching, I only stretch about 1 day a week. I don't have to do SR two times a day any more. I get a bodywork session about once a month. I still take supplements but not as much as before. The relaxation and change was, for a while, dependant upon strict practice, but now the relaxation has taken hold so I don't have to work so hard at being healthy and feeling good.
I hope this helps! Good luck with your program and feel free to write a question any time.
Best wishes,
Jan

Hi Michele,
That is amazing! They never taught us abdominal massage in massage school. I'm glad to hear it worked for you, too.
Sometimes I really have to focus on keeping my abdomen relaxed, but it does feel so much better now that I am over doing the abdominal massage.
Hope you're doing well...
Best wishes,
Jan

This was something NOT taught to me at all; my friends who I've spoken of frequently who are lifesavers to me, (husband/wife team) are the ones who did this with me.
We watched TV while they took turns for about an hour massaging and lo and behold - within 30 minutes I had a large BM... and from that day onward, I was fine.
All the raisens, juice, other constipation aids did NOT help at all. The only thing that helped was this.
She (the woman) stated that often in stress the valve can sort of get stuck, so even if you take all the dietary items that are "right" you can still have issues.
It was amazing.

Jan,
Thanks for all the feedback. How often did you get the bodywork sessions initially, and for how long? This is rolfing you are getting, right? I've been considering getting rolfed for a while.

Hi Sapphire,
I was getting massage once a month because that was all I could afford. If you can do it more often, go for it!
I just recently started getting rolfed.
I also did a lot of self-massage.
It's all about getting the body to be loosened of all the restrictions, in as many ways as possible. I will look forward to hearing about your progress.
Best wishes,
Jan

Hi Michele,
I too am amazed at how well my bowels are working now. It is interesting to feel how different my abdomen feels being more relaxed now instead of tight and stressed. I wonder why the massage schools keep this a big secret? The Upledger people teach "visceral manipulation" but I think it is very technical and we don't necessarily need to go into that much detail. There is also a woman teaching some kind of abdominal massage technique from the rainforest which seems pretty good, but it costs over a thousand dollars to take her class.
I'm going to continue to learn more about this on my own from the books the Upledger people use. It seems so very useful and almost totally ignored by the massage community.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Best wishes,
Jan
