Dr. Stoll,
I wanted to get massages for my CFS. I currently don't have that much of muscle pain but heard that some kind of massages can help the body to detoxify. What are those massage techniques called ? I just called the massagist that my doc refered me to and he said he just knew the regular massage and reacted if I was from Mars when I told him about getting toxins out of my body. I wonder if I should cancel and call someone else, but I don't know the term for the massage I would need. I'll also call a rofing specialist but don't know if I can afford it.
Thank you,
Bini

I think you will get detoxifying effects from just basic swedish message. I'm not an expert and have only had a few massages but shortly after each session my intestines would rumble and I would then have a loose bowel movement. I wouldn't feel sick at all from this occurring. I wouldn't shy away from traditional message especially if you can't afford other types. And drinking lots of water after a massage might help too! Thanks for reminding me that I need to routinely get a massage! Hope this helps!

Hi Bini,
Although I believe most (if not all) types of massages help with detoxifying to some degree, a lymphatic massage should be quite beneficial to you with a detox.
Also, with regard to rolfing - Rolfing is frequently billed to insurance as a form of physical therapy so your medical insurance company (assuming your are insured) may pick up a portion of those costs. It's certainly worth a try, and you could call ahead to your insurance company with the procedure codes and diagnosis (given to you by a Rolfer)to find out coverage prior to any treatment.
Good luck to you :)

Hi Bini,
Massage increases circulation of the blood and lymphatic systems and this will help move toxins out of your tissues. Be sure to drink plenty of water after your treatment.
On rare occasions someone who has never had a massage will be sick for a day after because of it. It's called a healing crisis and you will be fine.
I would agree with the recommendation for a lymphatic massage. It is very light, very pleasant and effective.
I don't know about CFS but fibromyalgia patients often react badly to deep massage feeling sore and bruised. So you might be wary of rolfing or other deep tissue techniques.
You may consider a visceral massage also called organ massage or visceral manipulation. Trigger points in the smooth muscles covering the organs can fire into and maintain chronic pain patterns in the skeletal muscles.
Please write again to let us know what you chose and how it worked out for you.
best wishes,
steven

Hi!
I'm June.one now due to an imposter! Deep tissue massage was what I had done in a series, which is the way Walt suggests doing it for your type of condition. This should be done 3 times a week for 2 or 3 weeks. Massage will help, among other things, to move lactic acid through your body so that you may rid yourself of it. Lactic acid build-up is one of the results of chronic bracing and since one with this build-up may be continuing to brace it becomes an endless cycle of accumulation of this substance and probably other toxins. Speak further with this therapist about your goals, perhaps give a try too. The point of doing the series close together is that you will see benefits faster, while you do the other important things for your wellness. I hope you found a source of Ester-C. And for detox I do highly recommend a rebounder to assist in clearing lymphatic congestion and other areas of toxic build-up in your body. As for the Rolfing, I have my 7th session this week; it involves working more deeply into the tissues into the level of the fascia. Get your massage therapy set up and do the other things you know to do so that you will continue to get better. Maybe Rolfing is something you can add one day too.
After massage drink copious amounts of water and consider soaking in a hot tub of Epsom salts. If you have access to a sauna this will further speed your detox. Do not be surprised if you experience a healing crisis in which you feel worse or increased symptoms. That type of thing is temporary so if/when it happens remember that it will pass and it means something good is happening from your bodywork, not something making you worse.
I'd love to hear how you've been doing. All the best to you.
June

I HAVE SOMEONE IN MY LIFE THAT HAS CRONIC HEP C AND STILL DRINKS. HE TAKES HIS MEDICATION SOMETIMES AND OTHER TIMES HE JUST DON'T CARE. I KNOW THAT HE IS VERY ILL AND DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP HIM. HE HAS THE SPIDER LIKE VAINES ALL OVER HIS BACK, AS WELL AS THE YELLOW SKIN TONE, AND STAYS IN THE BATHROOM WITH DIARREAH. HE USUALLY DRINKS 12 TO 15 BEERS A DAY.

Hi, Bini.
Forget THAT masseur. He can't have traditional training and has to have sort of learned on the job. That is not to say that he might not be good, technically. However, without his understanding what he is doing the technical expertise suffers. Rolfing is not the best for "detoxifying". It is best for other thngs.
The best detoxifying massages are: deep, total body, therapeutic massage; Krogering (crossways massage); Shiatsu and the like.
A good warm soak or whirlpool immediately after the massage will help flush the released toxins out of your body. Rebounding right then will also help a lot.
Let us know what you experience.

Hi, Denise.
Anyone who thinks they might have hepatitis, and still drinks, is frankly suicidal. If his doc did not tell him that, he is negligent. The chances are that he was told and elected to ignore it.
This boy is not long for this world.
