Hi Walt,
I want to thank you for recommending Rolfing as part of your wellness program. I had thought about doing it for years, but not until I read of your recommendation did I actually do it. I just completed session 7, and released tons of old grief, emotional issues, and other baggage that I needed to get rid of. I feel light and free. Rolfing's been more helpful for me than a zillion talk-therapy session. Thanks a million, Walt, and blessings on you and your wonderful work!

Dear Jenny,
Thanks for your Rolfing testimonial. I just hope others with similar problems will jump in here & communicate with you.
Rolfing is not a panacea, there are few enough of those in the universe. However, for the selected person, its results can (and often are) bordering on the miraculous.
Now, don't forget to take this new level of health & prolong it by continuing an effective skilled relaxation technique.
Namaste` Walt

Here's my understanding of it: Rolfing is a form of deep bodywork developed by Ida Rolf, who was a biochemist specializing in the study of collagen. Collagen is what our connective tissues are made of, what encases the muscles throughout the body. The layers of muscle are supposed to move smoothly over each other, but due to factors I'm not certain of (emotional/physical trauma, perhaps diet, etc), they get stuck together, and the result is stiffness, poor posture, fatigue, and general lack of life force. In my case, early-childhood trauma resulted in lifelong body armoring, shyness, other problems. My Rolfer says people can carry birth trauma in their bodies.
The Rolfer uses deep pressure of fingers, thumbs, even elbows to "unstick" the muscles. It is usually done in a series of 10 sessions, thoroughly releasing the whole body. Some of the work is painful, but only for a matter of moments--once the muscle is freed, it feels wonderful. As the muscles are unstuck, long-buried memories and emotions may also be released. Rolfers have counseling training along with their bodywork training so they can help clients process the material as it comes up.
They have a website: www.rolf.org. I'd love to hear what Walt has to say about Rolfing, especially the kind of conditions he'd recommend it for. Walt?

Dear Jennu,
I don't think I can say it any better than you have so I won't try. One can call (800) 447-0150 for an informational packet and the names of the closest Certified Rolfers.
Rolfing will help almost any chronic condition by freeing up the bodymind's horsepower trapped in this structural part of the bodymind.
I have seen many totally crippled arthritics "take up their beds & walk" just by Rolfing alone. It is a crime against humanity that the Arthritis Foundation has not put this right at the top of their recommendations. The problem is that Rolfers are not members of the "medical union" and, as such, are considered "competition" to the monopoly.
Who is this system supposed to be about anyhow???
Thanks for giving me the chance to let off some steam about this AND thanks for the website address!
Namaste` Walt
Dr. I am overweight by about 60lbs. I have a question about something. When I look at the back of my neck, I notice a hump there. Is this from being overwieght? Would it go away if I lost the wieght? If not, what is it from and what can I do? I can't even wear my hair up because I'm so embarrassed.

Dear Katy,
The quickest way to improve that lump is by Rolfing. See the testimonial about Rolfing in the posts on 7/24/98. If you are not familiar with Rolfing, call (800) 447-0150 for information AND the closest Certified Rolfer. It takes 10 sessions for a complete course.
You will have to lose the weight to get rid of the rest of it. Your physiologic response to Rolfing will help you with that and a strict whole foods diet will make it easy. Do not try the diet without Beth Loiselle, RD's book: (800) 870-5378.
Let us know how you do.
