MCS and wood flooring

Which is the least reactive type of wood flooring to use in a home? We will be using ceramic tiles in some rooms, but because we live in a climate that gets cold, would like to use a wood flooring as well. I've read that bamboo flooring might be the way to go. Any opinions?

Hi Luna,

A friend of mine with MCS recently had her carpeting removed and floors redone. She opted for ceramic tile in the kitchen (not sure about her bathrooms) and Pergo flooring for the rest of the house. She has large area rugs in some of the rooms. With wood flooring I would be concerned about the use of stains and topcoats. We have oak flooring under our carpeting, which I would love to investigate, but we stained and varnished an unfinished desk a couple of months ago. The stain was water-based, but the polyurethane was not and it bothered me quite a bit. I had to stay out of the basement until it was dry and the smell gone.

Hope you get some better recommendations.

As a very EXPERIENCED designer and construction manager with severe MCS here are my advices.

Hard oak flooring (not chemically treated) with resin coating to limit maintenance.
Do not use PARTICLE BOARD or similar trash.

Bamboo floring is really beautiful, but Bamboo (not a wood but it is straw) wears out very fast as its "strings" are wearing out.

Use large planks ( at least 12" x 2") to avoid swelling with moisture.

After resin (polyurethane or epoxy) dries it should be odor/toxicity neutral.

Using ceramic tiles minimum size of tiles should be 8" x 8".

The negative impact: Cost could be as high as $ 12-18 per square foot!

(Particle Board cost about $ 1.10 a square foot).

My husband is a contractor and he also says that particle board is a piece of trash. He has had to tear out too many of them they start to crumble with age. And if you spill water on them the same thing they start to crumble.

Thank you for your thorough suggestions. I would never have guessed that bamboo wears out quickly based on the marketing materials that are published about them! Definitely some things to consider. As we go through the process, I'll be sure to post a message with any findings or questions. You've all been so helpful!

Flooring requires hard wood.

Despite that Bamboo flooring is made using CROSSECTIONAL fibers it is a soft straw not wood.

To give it "resistance to wearing out" it needs to be treated.

If you can use thick layer of BAMBOO (say 1"+ and can afford to replane it once every other year (depending on usage) taking 1/16" - 1/8" it could give you very "WORM feeling". Planing using machines is not an easy task and hard to access corners.

I really like BAMBOO "decorative quality".

Great for bedroom flooring with limited tear and wear use.
