I am a teacher who has developed chemical sensitivity
over 3-4 years with exposure to something in new
classrooms. I've had the usual symptoms and many of
the students have reported what i now know to be
classical symptoms. I no longer teach in those rooms
but now am reacting to things i didn't react to before. At
the age of 52 I have just beendiagnosed as athmatic.
What puzzles me is that i am running from one medical
problem to another, and that i now seem to have a
permanently fuzzy head. This is quite worrying as i am
a maths/science teacher and am getting quite spacially
confused.
Has permanent damage been done to my brain? I am
considering leaving my employment as i am so easily
fatigued even after one lesson. I wear myself out daily
trying to find the things i have lost.
I feel like my health has been stolen from me: the
attitude of the administrators in my workplace is that is
is just me
Can anyone clarify the mental effects?

I have the same problems after a damaging chem exposure
14 yrs ago and still not right. Had to relearn math and
many other things and most strong smells really affected me.
Couldn't listen to music because if was too busy and had to
tape the news and keep rewinding to follow the stories.. I
had sensitivities to food, toothpaste, and more. Some
vitamins and minerals helped me. I think I wasn't absorbing
or utilizing them well after the injury. I used to get stabing, head
and face pains from some foods and eating oatmeal just a
few times stoped them.
I had spine and head pressure that I think came from
increased cerebral spinal fluid pressure that probably did
some brain damage and I was also loosing my central vision
which can come from an acid condition that makes blood pool
in the brain and press on optic nerves.
I think you have to try anything that sounds like it might
help and see how you feel after. I only take things that do
since I don't like to take things unless I can see that they
help since my system might not be able to handle things
that I would take that are supposed to be good. I even
question the things that help and some can be dangerous.

You have candida problems and possibley a Leaky Gut. Once candida gets into your blood stream (systemic) it can travel to any part of your body, even your brain. When this happens you get what is referred to as Brain Fog. Candida can cause or mimic 80 different symptoms, including chronic fatigue. You could also be experiencing side effects from consuming Aspartame and any other sugar substitute. These are poisins that will destroy your health and happiness.

Helen, I feel and know what you're going thru'. I had terrible multiple chemical sensitivities, so bad that turning on the water faucet made me react. I also had horrific bladder pain and a host of other health problems. What got me back to the land of the living, and I would say that my MCS is now 85% better (if not higher) is with detoxification. I noticed that I never sweated (when I was at my sickest), and so all those chemicals were staying in my body and keeping me sick. I bought a one person sauna for $1800 (www.promolife.com), and in the first month, my bladder pain was cut by 40%, and I felt better. I have had the sauna for two years now, and I now sweat completely from head to toe, and I feel great, and now, I can be exposed to things with no problems, whereas before my body would react (and now I eat and drink anything). I also periodically juice fast, and that helped too. You have to get whatever it is that making you sick, out of your body, so that your body can recover from it. Your MCS is not a permanent thing if you take steps to help your body heal (thru' detox and SR). It does take hard work, but you can recover. There are other things that I do too, but those three things helped me the most (sauna, juice fasting, and SR). Hope this helps you. :)

I agree with Susan. Detoxification is the key. I too developed a severe case of MCS along with CFIDS, Fibromyalgia and a host of other issues. I too am doing much better than I was but am not where I want to be yet.
You really need to see a good Dr than understands all this stuff (most don't). If you let the people on the board know where you live they might be able to recommend someone. In the meantime I would start with a green supplement it will really help with the detoxification.
There are many others on this board that will have alot of good suggestions for you. Best wishes and good luck.

Definitely detoxify your body. A complete nutritional supplement along with a good fiber supplement, preferably one with both soluble and insoluble fiber and digestive enzymes will do wonders for you. I know more than one person whose problems were the same as yours. These supplements brought them back to health when their doctors could do no more than prescribe drugs that caused more problems than they solved. E-mail me if you'd like.

First Helen,
let's take a look at the possible causes of your problem. It isn't absolutely necessary but
you may, once you are well again, want avoid re-exposing yourself. You can probably find the
causitive agents here.
Offhand it sounds like your complement of Choline has been depleted.
There are other brain chemicals that are associated with memory obviously, but you may
want to start with choline as a Q&D starting point to deal with your memory problems.
Next you may want a recap of memory boosting techniques as well as this operational guide to memory and then take a look at this one titled How Does Human Memory Work?
Finally, for the proactive and immediate future, you should take a look at this article for some suggestions on how your living environment and diet may not be contributing to a quick resolution to your problem.

Hi, Helen.
Everyone else has had such good suggestions, I have little to add.
When one is as effected by MCS as your brain is, you will not be able to coordinate this as well as you might have when you had all your faculties. SO, you might need the help of a good Clinical Ecologist till you are much better and can take over the approach yourself. See the MCS archives as to how to go about finding one in your part of the country.
Let us know how you do.

Here's something I found in the archives. I've located a Clinical Ecologist in the area which I work in FL. Only thing is that I've got to make the call to him yet.:-( When things get a little less crazy at work.

I'm 51 years of age and have been diagnosed with several illnesses as well. There was a time I was taking over 3 medications and by changing one of these medications caused me to have symptoms such as yours. It was as if I was in the twilight zone the majority of the time. How I coped at work I'll never know, nor how I was able to drive without getting into any incidents. People would look at me and ask if I was feeling alright repeatedly. The receptionist forwarded calls to my co-workers as she said I didn't look very well. I was freezing in 75 - 80 degree weather.
My PCP finally saw me as I'd been dodging his appointment, and told me I was "drugged!" from all of my medications. That these medications had finally reacted with each other and working against me, and to stop all meds at once. It took me several weeks before I felt like a human being again. Then 2 -3 months for me to act like a normal human being. I was waking up at 6am, driving to work, and could hardly make it back home to go to bed by 6pm Not over 3 meds yet, but sure the doctors would love for me to take pills to cover up my symptoms.
You mentioned that " that i am running from one medical

What is a green supplement and which one woud you
recommend. i live in Tasmania, australia. Most
doctors here are not helpful. I am currently supposed
to be taking a battery of antibiotics for anaerobic and
aerobic bacteria, prescribed for acute 'gastroenteritis'
but i think that this just might make me worse. I am,
however, on a waiting list to see a doctor who is also a
naturopath and hope that she will assist me in turning
the corner.

you're right about some things being non-helpful and
even damaging. And i think that we have a second
sense or intuition about some of these. It's hard when
the problem is so complex

You may find a correlation here between the construction materials and the kinds of symptoms
you are experiencing. If you can tell what the new classrooms are made out, you have a
better chance finding the antidote to the chem causing the problem.
On the other hand, you could simply decide to strengthen your entire memory/recall system
instead of trying to repair specific damage. In that case it would be helpful to know what
kinds of things are currently in your environment that are thwarting your efforts to return
to health. That would be found in this article: Memory Training. Smart drug and Brain Nutrient Combinations

problems were in my head and from stress which I didn't
believe since I felt that I knew myself and body pretty
well. Finally one Dr did say he knew what I had and it was
from chems But that they didn't know how to treat it. He
gave me a copy of a study from Australia that said that the
red blood cells get damaged and don't circulate well. I
read in a med book that Zinc was needed in the other membrane which
was the area affected so I took some and within minutes I
would feel better. I did need to take it minutes before
to prevent or delay symptoms or after to relieve most of
them.
seems like that could be a big part of it and when it is
constant we may figure out how to get things done but with
severe limits. Also the brain and muscles might not be
geting enough O2.
