Hi Dr. Stoll,
I am writing for my 26 yr old boyfriend. About 6 mos ago he wound up in the ER with pains under and through his ribs on one side, so bad he was hunching over and having a slight shortness of breath. The dr diagnosed him with pleurisy. He took some anti-inflammatory medication and was feeling better in a week. For the past 2 weeks he has had a dry cough - so bad where he can barely get through a sentence without coughing (was worse at night) - finally yesterday I took him to the ER after he was complaing of pain in his chest ... after a chest X-Ray & cardiogram, the dr diagnosed him with bronchitis & a touch of pleurisy. My question is why is this recurring for him and can you just get bronchitis out of the blue like that without having a cold or flu before it??? He does not smoke. The dr gave him an antibiotic and a cough syrup with codine in it. Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

I have used to get bronchitis every fall and winter for years. I started on a wellness program and have not had it since. I ALWAYS got a cold/flu before it turned into bronchitis. I suppose it is possible just have never seen it. I also got Pleurisy once and that was it, no bronchitis no cold/flu nothing. It just came out of the blue. Whatever the situation, it sounds like your boyfriend would benefit from Dr. Stoll's three-legged approach to wellness. Look it up in the archives.

Hi, Nicki.
Does he spend significant time around others that DO smoke?
Listen to Jon.
Serious allergy can do this---look into LGS and allergy archives.
My youngest brother had this for years and became terminal--his physicians could never figure out what was causing it. Within a few months of stopping his lawn pesticide and herbicide service (at my suggestion) he started getting well and has not had a problem now for 20+ years. See MCS archives.
Let us know what you learn and how he does.

Thank you Dr. Stoll.
He has bad allergies in general. I spoke to his mom last night and she informed me that he has had bronchitis a lot in the past when he was young.
Are the antibiotics & cough syrup just a band-aid for this problem??? Is there a possibility that this can become a serious, chronic condition???
