I have been back at work a short time, but I have suddenly realized how unhealthy my work environment is.
The first day back, I got Sick Building Syndrome. Throbbing headache and general feeling of unwellness.
Tonight, it was worse. I felt so restricted. Everything on my body felt restrictive. My clothing, my hair.I itched,I scratched, my eyes itched, my skin itched, my sinuses were blocked, felt fatigued, and just overall unhealthy. Felt claustrophobic.
I think there is a lot of dust around, even tho we have cleaners who come in regularly. I dont think they do a very good job. MOst of the time, I have to tell the hoover guy that he missed a spot and thats just in my work area!
Strange how we can get so use to an unhealthy environment and not even notice it until we have time away and then return.
The airconditioning is not the best. The air quality is very stuffy and very noticeable. As soon as you walk in from outside, it feels stifling. Plus we occasionally get car fumes getting into the aircon ducts which then travel up to our floor at work, because some idiot hasnt turned his engine off when he is parked downstairs in the loading bay.
I was thinking also about the fluorescent lights. I hate them! They are so bright, and designed to keep us awake, but they feel so harsh. Also, the radiation emitted from the computer terminals.
What can I do to lessen these effects, short of quitting the job? I was considering getting a radiation filter for my work computer, but that will only do so much.

I know how you feel. I have the same type of work environment. I work on a floor where we have art students that sometimes spray chemicals and they waft through the vents and right into my face. I have to get up and go outside when that happens.
I work in a building that is 40 years old and the air ducts spew out particles all over my work area, including these little black chunks. I have only been working here for 8 months, but my nasal allergies are starting up again. All of us are having problems, especially the boss who is having severe eye problems and recurrent infections. She finally called someone from facilities and they are going to try and do something about it. But, the building is riddled with asbestos and they said sometimes it is better to just leave things the way they are rather than disturb them.
Since starting this job, I have just been dreaming to move back to Oregon, on my own little piece of land where I can grow my own food and live in an unspoiled, unpolluted area. I wish!

I lived in Grants Pass from 1974 to almost the end of 1979. I loved it there, I miss it so much. I think back to the wild blackberries, pie cherries and crab apples that I could just pick and eat whenever I wanted. I had a pony, a goat that thought it was a dog, boarded three horses for someone, and a cow (we ate it eventually - yikes). The butcher actually came out to the pasture with his truck and slaughtered the poor creature there on site. We had our own little garden to grow vegetables and my mom would can food. Oh, how I long for that kind of life again. I can even remember the sweet smells of spring and summer.

Thanks, Miss.
Your only solution is serious wellness since the "system" will not protect you.
Let us know how you do.

Donna
Where you live sounds like paradise? I know of another paradise located here in Australia. My hearts desire......
Its my fourth day back at work, and I am hoping that its my immune system kicking in (fighting all the pollutants and chemicals in my work environment) and thats why I am starting to feel better there. Besides the ants in my pants feeling last night at work. :)))))
Coming back to work wasnt as bad as I thought. It was great to see everyone. I even got compliments on how healthy I am looking. Comments such as "what have you been doing, your skin is looking good and your hair is so healthy looking". Made me feel good inside.
I think a break away from it all was well warranted, and absolutely needed on all levels. Physical, spiritual and emotional. Although to be honest, I didnt really want to go. I was very stressed out before I left on holidays.
So nice to hear positive comments as sometimes I tend to dwell on negatives without seeing the positives. A distorted version of reality when u cant see the woods for the trees, so to speak. :)

Hi Donna,
I live 15 minutes outside of Grants Pass. I know exactly what you talking about. It would be difficult to move back into a metropolis.

Hi Barb,
It's such a small world. My mom lives in Florence and she went back to Grants Pass and told me that I wouldn't recognize it. That makes me feel sad. My memories of the old town and the two one way streets running through the main part of town are nice and I wish I could go back to that small town living. I am so sick of the shallow people here in L.A. that only care about their cars and their tan. It's a real rat race here.
We actually lived about 7 miles outside of Grants Pass near Applegate. We lived along the highway, right across from where Jerome Prairie Elementary School is. Do you live on that side? Have you lived there long? Wouldn't that be funny if we actually know each other?

Hi Donna, why don't you email me? I'd love to chat. You lived in one of my favorite valleys. We live on the opposite side of GP.
