I thought this was important. Sorry I messed up the link somewhat.
An interesting read for women:
> >Please pass this on to as many women as possible. If you are a woman and use pads, but especially if you use tampons, read this and pass it on to your friends.
> >For the men receiving this email, please forward it to your friends,

Check the labels of the sanitary pads or tampons that you are going to buy the next time and see whether you spot any of the familiar signs stated in this email. No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer
> >and womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in tampons? Why would they do this?
> >Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you're going to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so dangerous?
> >Because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did not consider tampons as being ingested, and, therefore, didn't consider them illegal or dangerous. This month's Essence magazine has a small article about this and
> >they mention two manufacturers of a cotton tampon alternative.
The companies

A woman getting her Ph.D at University! of Colorado at Boulder sent the following: "I am writing this because women are not being informed about the dangers of something most of us use: tampons. I am taking a class this month
> >and I have been learning a lot about biology and women, including feminine hygiene. Recently we have learned that tampons are actually dangerous (for other reasons than TSS). After learning about this in our class, most of
> >the females wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for one, am going to do something about it. To start, I want to inform everyone I can, and email is the fastest way that I know how.
> >HERE IS THE SCOOP: Tampons contain two things that at are potentially harmful: Rayon (for absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used inbleaching the products). The tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need
> >bleached white products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem here is that the dioxin, which is produced in this bleaching process, can lead to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially carcinogenic (cancer-associated) and is toxic to the immune and reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.
> >Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency &g (EPA( reported that there really is no "acceptable" level of exposure to dioxin given that it iscumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes from repeated contact (Karen Couppert "Pulling the Plug on the Tampon Industry").
> >I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month, for 38 years is repeated contact", wouldn't you? Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly absorbent substance. Therefore, when fibers from the tampons are left behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer that
> >it would with just cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS(toxic shock syndrome) occurs.WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
> >Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached and that are all cotton. Other feminine hygiene products (pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as dangerous. So, what can you do if you cant give up using tampons? Use tampons that are made from 100% UNBLEACHED. Unfortunately, there are very few companies that make these safe tampons. They are usually only found in health food stores. Countries all over the world (Sweden,Germany,British Columbia, etc.) have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the U.S. has decided to keep us in the dark about it. In 1989, activists in England mounted a campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later, the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching(one of the green methods available) (MS magazine, May/June 1995).

Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you're going to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so dangerous?
Dont you have anything better to do? This is the most ridiculous thing Ive ever read.

Lee - you are missing the point!!!! Try stopping to think about it.

LOL LEE! :>)))))
I think you need to read the whole article and not skim through it. You have missed some valuable points here. Try thinking about what you are reading next time, OK?

Ok, then maybe we should NOT wear pads or tampons and just bleed all over the place. Everyone get so shook up over things, take a chill, relax, and go with the flow. :)GEEEZ

I think YOU should think about posting drivel like this and scaring folks. You told Lee to think about what she was reading...
I thought about how the heck a dioxin can BREED???? That's what prompted me to look it up further, which I would have done before posting it on a public bulletin board.
LOL indeed, Maria...

I first heard of tampon in 1997 (recomended by an American friend) and tried it. Before I used up the small package, I decided that tampon is not for ME. First, there is this physical discomfort of putting it in; then the feeling of a tampon inside when walking etc is also unpleasant. Never ever used again.
I think to let the monthly-flow go out freely is best for our body. Anything that stops it or blocks before it can get out is like trying to stop nature and therefore unhealthy.
Another thing I heard about but never tried is douching--a very stupid idea, I think. I mean, for healthy women, there is no need for douching; for women with problems, they should treat the cause of the problem rather than trying to fix the symptoms. Douching can only make things worse.

Bing,
I would venture to guess that you inserted them improperly. I remember having a few problems when I first started using them, but now I do not experience any discomfort either with insertion, nor while I'm wearing them - one of the benefits for me is that I don't even know they're there!
I don't know that they are patently unhealthy - they don't "stop" or "block" the flow so much as soak it up. I'd argue that it's already "out" by the time it reaches the vagina. Like your nose or digestive tract, the vagina is really outside your body.
You do need know how to insert them, to use the least absorbent for your flow and not leave them in too long. I have never had any problem with them, and would not ever go back to pads, which to me are like walking around wearing a dirty diaper.
Just my .02 cents.

Hi chick, you may be right about the proper way of insertion, since I stopped using it before I even learned the tricks. But I'm still skeptical towards tampon because I don't know for certain this following scenario is good for our health: wasted blood and tissue being kept at body temprature in a moist condition for a few hours. With pads, the temprature is lower; there is also better ventilation; so there is far less chance for bugs to grow.
Also, I think it's a matter of habit. Once we are used to something, it feel natural and we don't want to change. For me, my particular way (Chinese) of using the pads with tissue paper NEVER make me feel like wearing a diaper :)

Thanks for the link. But I'm not sure it clears up anything about the safty of tampons, since the article uses FDA reports as the authority for product safety.
The best bet for women's health is to use synthetic, processed stuff (including food, clothing, cosmetics) as little as possible. When in doubt, use the greener products.

So why dont you tell us what you found out then? If you have contradictory information that can be backed up, by all means please inform us all.

I too have never liked tampons. I only wear them if I am going to the beach or wearing something that may be revealing. Otherwise, never. I knew instinctively that my body didnt like them, even tho I knew about TSS. I also knew that cotton tampons were better, although they are definitely harder to insert. Although when I wore them, I never felt them at all inside of me.

We HAVE to wear them, regardless...right???

Bing, I thought you way of putting the wearing of a pad as Chinese was funny. It made me laugh. My Polish mother did the same thing for bladder problems and never had an odor. No bugs hovered around either! I still like a tampon though for blood flow because I can't stand all the muck sticking to me. I agree with Chick that a pad when you bleed is like a dirty daper feeling.Smelling sweet in PA.and no bugs folowing me!

You're Gross and Crude! Yukky person!
In Reply to: Re: A Warning to Women posted by Maria on September 16, 2002 at 18:16:37:
Use your head...dioxins can't breed. Asbestos is dangerous enough that the people MAKING the tampons would need protection...are you THAT paranoid that you think it would go unnoticed even by the workers??? That would be a huge OSHA consideration and would be common knowledge.
Why are you asking for "back up" when YOU are the one posting a scare tactic email. The woman from the university who the email claims sent the warning disassociated herself with it. There is SO much bs in that email I can't believe you believed it!!! And now you're asking for back up from me!!! LOL
Read the link and try not to let it get colored with your fear.

FDA reports are not the only info presented in that link, also see my post to Maria...common sense tells me that the email is a huge bunch of BS. The ONLY correct info has to do with dioxins and with rayon, and that's not really news. The rest of it is a bunch of totally untrue scare tactics!

Using pads with tissue paper?? Sorry don't understand that, could you explain?
In Reply to: Re: Urban legend or not,, why do women use unhealthy things on their body? posted by Curious on September 17, 2002 at 10:21:21:
Sure I can explain it: one of my quirks is I don't like any synthetic products to touch my skin directly, so I put some toilet tissue to neatly cover the top of the pad. Then, using the traditional Chinese idea of attaching the pad snuggly to the body with a cotton twine. The pad mainly function as a support of the tissue, which is replaced every couple of hours; but the pad usually stays a day or two. Really, I personally find this by far the most comfortable way of dealing with my "good friend"--as we call it in China.

In the modern world, where just about every product is backed by interest-groups and hidden agenda, and the agencies like FDA is not helping much, ALL I CAN trust is my own bits of common sense in chosing what to eat, what to drink, and what to use on my body.
I'm skeptical to many of the "new produces" in foods, body care, and househould produces. If there is a simple, natural, and more primitive alternative to the more modern, fashionable ways of doing things, I almost always opt for the simpler, natural version. That's ALL I'm saying, here and in my other posts. So to me, it doesn't matter whether the first post here is urban legend or not.
