severe edema

Hi,
I am posting this in hopes of another insight to what's going on with my body.
About 7 years ago, I had my throat swell up and I could not even talk or barely breathe without gagging. I have had extremely large tonsils my whole life and the doctors saw no reason to remove them. I went to the doctor, a new one, for my throat and he gave me prednisone. After the first three days on prednisone, my throat was not any better and I was very sick from the medication. I weaned myself off, and while I had to wait another 2 weeks to see the same doctor, I noticed that my whole body began to swell up, especially my hands, legs, feet, and my face.
I went to another doctor instead and he did blood work, found me to be retaining excess water (40lbs.!) and put me on Lasix, zyroxlin, and potassium pills. My weight before the water gain was 240lbs. and I was extremely active, my weight after the water was almost 290lbs.
I have been on this medicine for almost 7 years, and my kidneys, heart, liver and everything else has tested ok.
My last test was for a cortisol level, which was at above 4,000!
I will be retested for this soon.
I want to know if there is a connection between the prednisone and this problem. Or is there another condition which may cause this severe water retention. If i go off these pills, I gain back about 25lbs. of water and my brain gets all fuzzy. I have been overweight for half my life, (I'm 42 years old), but I have always been active. My previous job involved climbing 9 to 11 telephone poles a day, and at least 15 flights of stairs daily.
I am only 5'4" tall, and I have been in a constant battle to lose weight. I would like to get off these meds permantly and be healed.
Is this possible?
Thanks.

Are cortisol levels in regular blood work or heart blood work?
I've had blood work recently and would LOVE to know my numbers!
What is the name of it on a blood test? I'm guessing - CRT?

Hi Lori,

Hi to another pole climber!

Have you had a complete thyroid panel tested?

How about a blood test called Hemoglobin A1c to check on how well you are handling blood sugar rises? You may be diabetic and not even know it. You should worry about your kidneys.

It might be time to seek the services of a doctor who has success with others in your condition.

Hi, Lori.

I think it is a shame that all your docs have done so far is treat the tips of the iceberg (symptoms).

This is obviously a severe hypersensitivity to something(s). If I were you, I would get copies of ALL my medical records and while I was doing that would find the closest Clinical Ecologist to see me in consultation. See the MCS archives for how to find one.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Friends,

You-all might have noticed the many spelling errore of my name over the past month or so.

My computer is acting up and delays the actual appearance of what I typed for about 10-15 seconds after I type it. After typing my name, and the first sentence of the message, the text begins to show up as I type it.

Sometimes I forget to go back to check the spelling of my name.

If anyone has any idea why this is happening, I would surely appreciate hearing about it!

It is not really Alzheimers :o).

Walt,

You may need to do a "defrag" on your hard drive, if you haven't done one for a while.

Best wishes,
Jan

I don't know if the cortisol levels are measured in the blood or heart work. I believe it's in the blood work.
I have been under so much stress that I am wondering if that's what's causing the elevated levels.
I am supposed to have another test, but the doctor is telling me to do it 3 days after my last period. It's a little bit hard to remember not to eat on the third day. I still have to try.

Hi Ron,

I haven't climbed poles in about 6 years now, I had to get out of that job as it was getting a little too hazardous, and I wanted a change, but I do miss it.
Yes, I have been tested for diabetes, and thyroid every six months, both are negative. I have a strong healthy heart and yes, I can bend over and tie my own shoelaces, even though I weigh 240-250 lbs.
I do worry about my kidneys, but without this medication, I get so swollen I look like a neandethal woman, and I get exhausted, can't think, can't eat because I always feel full, throw up if I eat more than 1 meal a day when I don't take the Lasix.
Sigh, I have been to seven doctors now...nobody has found a thing wrong with me, and I am getting frustrated.
I always thought it might be an allergy, but the allergist only confirmed my alleries to green bell peppers,(not red), crab and lobster (wow, won't I be a cheap date!), and dust mites.
I think I will try a Clinical Ecologist, even though I have never heard of this before.

Hi Walt,

A lot has to do with how busy the processor is and how much
information is held in the memory cache.
I had the same problem as you do before I did the following.

If too many programs are running in the background, try
turning the ones that you don't need all the time.
You can still activate them when you need them, but they won't be taking up resources until then.

If your hard drive light is constantly flashing even when
you are merely on line, but not accessing any particular site, your processor may be acting as an agent and sending out spam if a trojan has taken up residence.

Download Spybot to identify worms, spyware and
data miners and quarantine them.

Download Ad-aware to block unwanted hackers fom accessing
your machine and to control what comes in and tries to go out in the background.

Download "Firefox" an alternate browser from Mozilla.
It plugs a lot of the holes that microsoft has not bothered
to plug. It also blocks advertising and popups, allowing everything to run faster.

The above are all free programs from relaible sources.

Good luck

Ron

Hi Walt,

This is malware until proven otherwise. Listen to Ron.

You have likely inadvertantly picked up some spyware from the internet and it is slowing down your computer.

You might want to see a computer technician in consultation to help you sort this out. Be sure to have all of your computer records with you in your hand when you see her. See your yellow pages to find a nerd in your area.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Russ

PS. sorry for the tongue-in-cheek reply but I couldn't resist :o)

Hi Russ,

That was very entertaining. :)

You have studied well.

I might add that looking in the virus and worm archives
could prove fruitless, or at best... misleading.

Thanks, Ron.

So far as I can tell I am running no other programs. I have Norton's best protection, Spykiller and Adaware On my system.

Any more ideas are most welcome.

Thanks, Russ.

So far, I have had 2 local nerds look at the system. That is how I got the adaware and the spykiller. I already had the Norton. So far it has not made one bit of difference.

We are now down to wiping everything and reformating the entire system or buying a new computer and sending this one to the land-fill. Perhaps, if I just had a long talk with the 'puter, so it will know what it's future can be, it will begin to cooperate?

You know, I don't remember the levels...I have a thyroid test done every 6 months, it runs in my family.
I will have to pull all my medical files...(need a truck for them) and check it out.
Meanwhile, I can't find a clinical ecologist in my area...so now what do I do?
