Allergies to water

Hey...I brought up an interesting subject in my science class the other day. I saw an article in the paper about a little girl that was allergic to water. She couldn't bathe, cry, or do anything that involved contact with the substance. Is that possible? I've heard it is, but this one OBNOXIOUS boy in my class picks on me constantly about it, and i want to know if it is possible. Please send me a response so i can prove it to all of them that i'm not some silly high school freshman. thanks!

If someone were allergic to water, it seems to me they could not survive more than 3 days. Water is in everything, including all the foods we eat and beverages we drink.

I would like to see this article!! How did they explain the girl's survival?

Laura,
An allergy is a reaction to a protein, so I doubt anyone could be truly allergic to water unless it's to some contaminant in the water. People can have reactions to their own body fluids as an autoimmune response, but that still involves proteins as far as I'm aware (I'm not an immunologist!)

The only other explanation I can think of is that this person has hydrophobia, or a fear of water. Phobias can cause all sorts of psychosomatic symptoms (physical symptoms caused by the mind or emotions). When you said she "couldn't" bathe, etc., what exactly happened when she did?

I don't think she could be allergic to water, but perhaps to the chlorine in it from the tap. There are many people who have chemical sensitivities that can't tolerate chlorinated water.

Hi, Karen.

This is not an allergy but a hypersensitivity.

Hi, Laura.

Good question!

This problem is becoming increasingly more common every year as there are more and more chemicals in our water now.

At last count, the number in our water now is based on how far we look.

Just consider, for example, how many medications there are that go right through our systems and are excreted. There are no natural ways for them to be cleansed from our water (since they never existed in nature until the past 50 years) and so, they come right back to us in our shower water.

The only thing our water purification system is designed to remove is germs that might cause an epidemic of infections or parasitic infestations. There are now more than 50,000 chemicals in our water that just keep increasing in concentration. Eventually, ALL of us will be hypersensitive to something in our shower water.

Karen is right. It would be impossible to be allergic to water. However, just because it looks like water is no reason to think it IS water.

An additive in the water, or the water itself?

Nevermind, I saw your other post above
