Has anyone ever heard of aching in shoulders and arms and heart racing after eating something that has MSG? I know this is what it's from because the same exact symptoms occur every time, you would think I would start reading lables before I eat it!!!! this reaction happened for the first time while eating at a chinese restaurant and ever since then I can't eat anything that has it, but of course there is no doctor so far that has ever heard of this reaction! If you know anything about this or a fix to it when I accidently eat something with it in there PLEASE reply!!thank you very much!!

I remember once my husband got sick from it in something....chiropractor said it was probably 'good' for me!
I suppose some react more differently............
many Chinese restaurants have a sign on the door or by the counter..........
you just have to ask..........and read labels as it is in a lot of things!!
drink a lot of water, and flush it out!

I think that's a typical symptom for anything that you are sensitive to. And many people can't handle MSG.

Trina,
Yes! MSG is one thing that many people have reactions to and need to avoid. I've even heard it called "Chinese restaurant syndrome!"
Best wishes,
Jan

Hi Trina,
You also have to watch out for canned stews, soups, flavoured tortilla and corn chips, flavoured potato chips, etc..
Read the labels.

Yes! Yes! Yes !
I thought I was the only one that had that reaction -- it's like a panic attack and I hate it!
There's a packet of seasoning that I used to put on my chicken when I cooked it for chicken tacos. I noticed though - that each time I ate it ( and I only have one taco at dinner because they're huge ) .. I get a panic attack feeling that can last for hours.
I don't get that feeling when eating a chicken taco from Taco Bell so I knew there must be something in what I was cooking. Sure enough .. after reading the package .. it doesn't say MSG but it does have a big long word that probably is MSG and they thought they'd fool me.
A few days after figuring that out .. I used only 1/4 of the package .. just enough to give the chicken flavor and I didn't get any panic attack symptoms.
I now stay away from the stuff and it's really too bad because it tasted really good. Nothing is ever good enough to live through a panic attack though.
I'm so glad it's not just me .. but feel sorry for all who have reactions like I do. :(
I think the stuff is called .. Chicken Fajita seasoning -- it comes in a little packet.
Sooo good yet sooo EVIL!

Hi Trina,
If you do happen to eat something containing MSG that kicks off a reaction, there IS a remedy. The antidote is a squeeze bottle of Kyolic liquid garlic. If you start to feel strange, take 1 tablespoon in about 6 ounces of water right away. Get it down quick and chase with more water, if necessary. The garlic crosses the blood-brain barrier and stops the reaction. You may still feel tired afterwards, but it will pass quickly. Yes, the garlic tastes awful, but it is better than suffering a toxic MSG reaction. Garlic pills don't work--just the Kyolic liquid. I often take a bottle with me when I am going out to a new restaurant or ordering a new dish, and when I go to someone's house or a potluck. Fortunately I don't have to use it often.
BTW, MSG is in so many things, and it has many names when used as an ingredient in processed foods. It's not just Chinese restaurants that use it. I've been MSG'ed in a lot of nice restaurants. Even health food store brands and products may contain MSG. Anything autolyzed or hydrolyzed, like autolyzed yeast extract, is MSG, as are caseinates. This website has more information and a list of MSG/potential MSG-containing ingredients.

Hope you can avoid it in the future and stop a reaction quickly if you can't avoid it.

My Mum has a reaction after eating from certain Chinese restaurants. I think this most probably comes down to which use MSG and how much they use.
I think if eating any prepared food at a restaurant or takeaway, then you risk MSG, GM, and who knows what else, colours, flavours etc. It definitely won't be a Whole Food diet anyways. Either ask, or prepare all your own food. If you're doing the 3LS then the latter is possibly your only option.

Seperate question for anyone who knows.... while we're on the topic.
What is the purpose of MSG anyway? Does it actually enhance flavour or is it just used because it is addictive?

Yes, your symptoms are from MSG. I ate at an 'all you can eat' Chinese buffet once and after I went to sleep that night I had a huge headache, cold sweats, and my heart was racing. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I went back there and the same thing happened that night too!
Since then I realized that almost everything has MSG in it. It goes under many names, 'natural flavoring, autilized yeast extract, sazon' and others!
The reason it is in so many foods (and it's purpose) is because it tricks you brain into thinking the food tastes better than it does (Flavor enhancer) and hence makes you want to eat more & more. Which means you spend more and more money buying more and more. It is in everything from fast food to soda, cereals, prepared rice & pasta dishes, sauce, soup, cold cuts, doritos, etc... Small amounts may not seem to effect you as larger doses which is in Chinese food. I have read that it is also a main cause for migraines. Sounds like our food is all poisened doesn't it?

Can you just chomp some garlic also if you don't have a pill or liquid
around?

Hi Michele,
All I can say is try it and let us know. My source says Kyolic liquid garlic is the only thing that works, and it does work for me. I keep a bottle in the fridge at home, carry it with me when I'm out, and take it on trips, just in case.
Fortunately I'm pretty good at avoiding MSG and in recognizing when I have a reaction starting. Also, I'm apparently not as affected by it as I used to be.
Let us know how well it works.

Hi Sally,
You crack me up, Sally! This one I can't claim credit for. A healing practitioner I know who studies nutrition and supplements told me about this. It has stopped a few bad reactions for me, and I continue to be amazed at how well it works when I accidently ingest MSG.
I sure wish it was never necessary to use it. MSG is vile stuff.

Hi Chris,
Amy's post has a good description of how MSG works. It is addictive and works on the brain, not actually enhancing the flavor of the food. Good cooks don't need it to make food taste good.
There is also a fascinating book about it and other additives called Excito-toxins: The Taste That Kills.

The thing is, MSG is really hard to avoid when eating out because it has so many hidden names. Even if you asked about MSG, most servers don't know everything about what's in the food, or they might just take the easy way out and say they don't use it. You can ask to see all of the labels for seasonings and prepared foods they use in the kitchen for your dish, but then you'd have to know all of the hidden names, and there is a long list of ingredients that might contain it or might not.
Best approach is to avoid sauces, liquid dressings, and marinades and hope the meat and french fries aren't already soaked or injected with broth or seasonings. Simpler foods. Sometimes you have to ask for substitutions and even recreate a dish from what's on the menu.
Some Chinese, Thai, etc. restaurants advertise that they don't use MSG, or will prepare your food without it if you ask. These are safer bets than those that do use it, but not foolproof. The food is often better, and safer, at home!

michele, I don't remember reacting to it when it used to be pretty prevalent in a lot of foods. Maybe I've been immunized.

Trina, I too am VERY sensitive to MSG, AND hydrolyzed soy, meat and vegetable protiens. Also have similiar reaction to products such as lunchmeats, bacon ham etc. after I eliminagted them from my diet, my blood pressure returned to normal, my "asthma" went away as did my dizziness, shortness of breath and my "MVP"(which was diagnosed thru ultrasound, have had 2 repeat ultrasounds and no a single fluttery flap)...MSG is just one of many culprits for dangerous symptoms, that we willingly feed to ourselves!
Don't have any proof, but have heard rumor that there are many food additives, chemicals that are produced as a byproduct of other processes, that are prohibited from being dumped as they are considered an environmental contaminant, BUT these companies funded studies that found when consumed in small quantities, had no "adverse" affects in the lab so these chems have been determined safe to use as food additives.. it is MY opinion that the chemical companies are using us(humans) as "filters" to dispose of their environmental contaminants, as they cannot legally dispose of them by other economic means.
