chemical induced asthma

Posted by sick in tn on March 14, 2001 at 00:03:26:

I work in a paint & bodyshop and was first diagnosed with occupational asthma.I had been exposed to several chemical,i.e. isocyanates, toluene and several solvents, paint thinners, laquer thinners, enamel thinners. After filing a workers comp. claim ,sent to their Dr. his diagnosis was hypersensitive airways. Another Dr. says I do have asthma but I got it from allergies and not the chemical exposure. My job of 18 yrs.is treatig to terminate me.I have never had allergies or asthma and no family history of either. I am currently on Serevent, Combivent ,and Flovent. They tell me asthma just happens aand has nothing to do with my exposure. They also tell me that my asthma is a permanent condition that I will always have. Can you comment on this.

Sick,

I had a bad reaction to chems at work that damaged me. I
knowing what happens and when you have the reaction will
help determine what you have and if it was started by the
chems.

I had an incident where my lungs started burning and my
vision, balance, and coordination went off and I became
chemical and then food sensitive and weak and little
stamina. I have worked with Many chems and some that you
listed and at the time was being exposed to a copy machine
ink but I Think something else got into the room like a mix
of bleach and ammonia.

It is possible to get asthma at any time in your life, but considering the type of work that you have done and chemical exposures, I would certainly wonder about it. Have you seen a pulmonologist?

Hi, sick.

Either your doc is an incompetant OR he is in the pay of the company. You need to get another opinion and you need to get it from someone who knows what she is talking about.

Contact a Good Clinical Ecologist (see tha archives about this). You can reach them (for information and a list of the CEs in your part of the country) by going to their website at info@aaem.com or aaem@bellatlantic.net. THEN, you can find the best one on that list by calling FMU at (800) 843-9660 and asking them to send you a list of the docs in your area who have subscribed to their service for at least 2 years.

Finally, you can get help from the largest lay organization in the country that exists to get people like you information about this--primarily because so many conventional physicians are so ignorant about this. Contact CIIN (Chemical Injury Information Network) at ciin.org or by letter at Box #310, White Sulphur Springs, MT 59645. You might also contact the EPA with your story since they have finally admitted that your problem is fast becoming a national crisis.

Companies will continue to stonewall this as long as they have money to buy the most expensive legal teams.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thank-you Dr. Stoll, you have given me renewed hope that there is help out there, it's just a matter of the right contacts.I think what you are doing is a wonderful and compassionate service for many who feel they have run into dead-ends with no alternatives.Again, thank-you for the refrences.
