One Cause of Hives

Please let your readers know that if they have chronic hives, eczema, or asthma, they may be reacting to a food color called Yellow #5 (a coal-tar derivative). A mother whose son almost died from an asthma attack submitted a petition to the FDA, and it’s open for public comment till Oct. 13, 2001. We need public support for this petition. To comment, go to http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/voice.html, and click on "submit your comments." Another window pops up, but our petition is NOT in the drop-down menu. So click on the “E-mail” link, then on the subject line type in "Docket #01P-0345, Ban Yellow #5." Say that you support the petition to ban Yellow #5 and give your name and address. If you have a reaction, describe it. Even if you don’t have a reaction, you can oppose artificial additives as unnecessary, since humans shouldn't ingest coal-tar. Studies linking it to asthma, hives, ADHD, and as a possible carcinogen shouldn't be ignored. Anyone can comment; they do not need to be US citizens.

Thank you for any column space you can give this. Did you know some European countries have already banned this? Those of us with the sensitivity live in constant fear of Yellow #5 reactions, because it’s in nearly every food group! It’s in orange drinks, pickles, muffins, candy, Chinese noodles, cheese products, and vitamins, to name just a few!
