Onset of MCS after Nystatin, Caprylic Acid, and Enzymes?

Posted by Jay on October 03, 2001 at 18:23:57:

I have had moderate to severe fatigue and muscle weakness for over a year. After visits to many many doctors one doctor(integrated medicine doc.) finally did tests for candida and parasites and put me on Nystatin, caprylic acid, Lipase plant enzymes (for fat digestion), and probiotics (Culturelle GG, Bifidos, and Lactobacillus). I have taken these above medications and supplements for 5-6 weeks now and for the past 3-4 weeks i have developed strong sensitivities to Perfumes, house cleaning agents, and cosmetics. I did NOT have these conditions before - my nose becomes congested, breathing gets a bit difficult, and thinking becomes a bit foggy and i feel a bit upset (depressed). Takes a few hours to get better after i get away from these chemicals (odors). how can i stop the progression of these sensitivities??

My fatigue situation definitely has improved with these medications & diet in the past 4,5 weeks but MCS has set in.
Could my medications have triggered MCS in some way? does anyone think it will get better if i stop these medications before i complete the full course of medication (8 weeks)? One allergy doctor(MD)looked at my recent chest Xray and said that my lungs are mildly hyperinflated and he wants to do tests to see if it was mild asthma. He gave me steroid sprays and i didn't take it (don't want to be addicted). my dhea level is borderline and cortisol is normal.

i have been very very careful with my diet as per Dr. Stoll's diet and for the past one month tried extra hard to remove allergens (dust, mold, etc) out of my home.

any suggestions? pls help!

Your liver is overloaded by all these supplements, hence the MCS. The trick is getting your system detoxed enough so that your body can recover. Throwing supplements left and right at an already taxed liver just causes more problems. Saunas and juice fasting are two things that you can do to ease the burden on your liver. I used to have terrible problems with MCS until I did these two things. Now, I can pretty much eat anything. Bleach still causes problems though. Good luck.

The exact same thing has happened to me. I have been coping with fibromyalgia by juicing, taking sauna's 3-5 times/week (far infra-red) and a supplement called Immunocal which is an undenatured whey protein which is supposed to increase glutathione levels and act as a major liver detoxifier. Suddenly about 3 weeks ago immediately after having my hair died, I developed major sensitivities to any chemical smells, my heart started palpating and I was a bit short of breath. This still comes and goes, although not as severe as at first. I'm not sure if all this detox is too much for my already over-taxed liver, but this extra sympton piled on top of an already huge pile is discouraging to say the least. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The exact same thing happened to me 3 wks ago following a hair dye. I was treating my fibromyalgia with a supplement called Immunocal which is an undenatured whey protein designed to increase glutathione levels and detox the liver. As well, I was in the far-infrared sauna 3-5 times per week, ate whole foods and juiced regularly. I suddenly developed severe sensitivie to any chemical smells, heart palpations and shortness of breath. Was it too much detox at once for my liver? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Jay.

Everyone's story matches.

You probably need a clinical ecologist IF some of those suggestions do not help.

Have you read the archives about MCS? If so, are you a member of CIIN?

Remember, in the long run, the single most important thing is SR.

Walt

Linda, could you be a bit more specific on what you took from Metagenics? Was it the UltraClear? Thanks.
