Dr. Stoll - question on HRTs

Posted by Barb [1046.74] on September 11, 2004 at 11:19:23:

In the more recent years on the bb you recommend using estriol.....In the archives in 1999 you recommend premerin. I had a hysto left the ovaries in. I think my ovaries have stopped functioning and I'm having to use estogen replacement now because of the menpausal symtoms. I found estriol creme with progesterone but it is really espensive for my pocket..;o) Also, my body doesn't tolerate progesterone any longer.

I did some research on premerin. It has progestin in it along with the estrogen. I have strong reactions to progesterone. Not sure if I would react to progestin.

Now that we are in 2004 almost 2005, do you still recommend premerin for women who have had hysterectomys?

One more question. With premerin, do you have the other side effects that you have with plain estrogen (estradiol)
weight gain, sore breasts, etc?

Thanks Walt, Barb

Hi Barb! It's been a long time. I hate to disagree with Walt, but Premarin is the worst form of estrogen you can use. I had terrible reactions to it. Why not use a vaginal cream made with estriol which can be done at a compounding pharmacy. I 've been using that for over three years now with very good results.

Hope you are doing well. All the best,
Naya

Hi Naya, how ya doing girl? I'm doing ok except for the struggle with estrogen & menapuase symtoms. I appreciate the suggestion regarding the estriol creme. Do you have to have a prescription for a compound pharmacy? I'm going to have to ask around to see where we have one in our area.

I have a few questions for you? Do you have any of the side effects of estrogen? Such as, weight gain, cravings, sore breasts.....etc.

I remember that you also posted about vaginal dryness before. Does the creme help with that?

Thanks for posting! Good to hear from you.
BTW, how are you doing? I remember recently reading your posts that you were having a pretty hard time.

Hi Barb! I'm not doing so well over all and especially today. I did too much the last three days and really killed myself. Plus here in Long Beach it's so damn hot and I have no AC. It's about 90 in my apartment. I feel like I'm going to die and I just took my temp and see that I actually have a fever. I'm still having the same old problems despite trying I don't know how many things that I just can't tolerate, including probiotics!

I've been doing acupuncture which as far as I can tell is doing nothing and I'm doing allergy testing and discovered that I'm allergic to all the grasses, weeds and stuff like that. haven't started on the foods yet. I still don't have the antigens cause we're not done testing for the weeds and grasses. While I'm in AC, I feel much better. I just saw that the air quality in LA is dangerous for highly sensitive people. Probably here, too.

I've had no problems with the estrogen cream and yes, you do need a prescription. Do you have a good holistic doc or a forward thinking gyno? It's easily prescribed. i have it mailed to me. I am, however, believe it or not allergic to estrogen and have to take allergy shots for that, too. but you'll probably be ok. I can take this stuff and it works great for dryness. Without it, after the total hysterectomy, I couldn't even have sex. And now I can. It took about three months to work for me after not being in a relationship for a very long time and not taking anything at all. As i said, i've been on it for over three years.

Sorry to go on so long, but I hope that helps a little. Anything else you want to know, just ask. I'm here sweltering. i doubt I'll be going anywhere tonight. My boyfriend works Sat. nites.

Take care! How have you been doing? Pretty good, i guess, since you haven't been around on the BB.

All the best,
Naya

Hi Naya,

I feel for ya!!! I hate hot weather. When its hot, I can't do anything. We were having some pretty hot weather in July and August, up around 101 to 105 degrees. UGH. We don't have AC either. I do live in a forest, (the allergies would kill ya too) and the house stays cool until the weather hits around 100....then it starts to swelter. We are slowly moving into fall and the weather has been around 85 degrees.;o) I'm a happy camper now.

My goodness, the allergy thing has really been bad for you! Life is just not fair is it. I know you've tried everything, you can't win for losing! Its sucks.

I do have a great family Doctor I go to. I will see if she can prescribe estriol for me. Gosh, I couldn't believe how painful sex is since having estrogen problems....EEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKkkkk........... Got the worst yeast infection I've had in years. UGH........You know, women sure go through alot.

Thanks again,
Barb

Hi again, Barb! Where abouts do you live? I know what you mean about the sex. As I said, it took about three months of using the cream till it didn't hurt too much any more. And , yeah, you can get really irritated. But you'd be amazed at how using the vaginal cream can plump those tissues right up again. If you're not too allergic there is a cream called Estrace which is estradiol and is still better than using Premarin. It's just estradiol, not estriol and you can get it at any pharmacy with an Rx. It doesn't have to be compounded. Maybe you could try that first. If all you're after is vaginal relief, either one would be great. it's just that with my sensitivities, I couldn't use the Estrace. Both are supposed to be safe and you don't have to put the cream in every night after you reach the desired results. Just three times a week is all I have to do. Why suffer?! Go for it, girl. It works!

Naya, I live in Southern Oregon in the country on 5 acres.
So, you just use the creme 3 X a week in place of a pill? I might be able to use that instead. I don't seem to have any allegies to the estridiol. I take it in pill form right now. Your right! I don't want to suffer...lol....
Thanks
Barb

Hi Barb! Oh, that sounds so nice! I haven't seen woods, etc. since I moved from PA. Sure do miss them in all this barren dryness. It hasn't really rained here in almost two years. I forget what rain even feels like.

Yeah, I just use the cream, no pills, and it works just fine. Couldn't tolerate the pills.

Try it! You'll like it! lol

Hi Naya, how did you end up in LA? Do you have to stay there? The woods are nice. Must say about March I've had enough of the rain. Always look forward to the spring.
You gotta get up here sometime! Best time is in the spring.

Hi, Barb.

I have been recommending estriol with no progesterone for years now. Look at the aging archives for how to find a specialist. Let us know what you learn.

Thanks, Naya.

I changed my recommendations to estriol years ago. I am not computer savvy enough to know how to expunge the premarin from the website. I have always recommended against the routine use of progesterone.

See my response to an earlier note about this today.

Hey, Barb. I'm not in LA, but in Long Beach. My brother and father are out here, too, but in Santa Monica and LA. it's a long story how I ended up here. I'm too sick to move again for now, though. Maybe someday, I hope.

Hi Barb,

Does it rain most of the time in Oregon? I live in SoCal too and am not terribly fond of living here. I've often thought about Oregon or Nevada as a possibility.

Thanks for the great thread about HRT. I just started back on the natural stuff made up by a compounding pharmacy that includes E1,E2,E3, Progesterone and a little Testoserone. I'm really glad I read your post. Now you've got me thinking.

Mary
