Hi all - it's been a while since I've posted a question, and I'm really desperate! I have a muscle spasm in my neck that has been going on for about three days now. I do my SR, just started exercising regularly, give myself weekly mag. sulfate injections, and also take oral magnesium in the a.m. (and calcium in the p.m.). I see a chiropractor regularly, and she did an adjustment today which cleared up the right side of my neck, but the left side is killing me (it was so tight on that side that she couldn't get it adjusted). The pain is now shooting down my left arm and into my left hand. The pain has been so bad that Percocet doesn't even touch it. The only thing I have found that worked was 800mg Motrin, but after two doses, I was practically doubled over with stomach pain.
I see the chiropractor again next week, but I have a whole weekend to get through, and it looks like it's going to be a long one! I have held off on any exercise that might aggravate it since it started, but have tried gentle stretching as my chiro recommended (that really hurts). Ice makes it hurt worse, but I've been told not to put heat on it. Does ANYONE have any recommendations for me?! Since drugs obviously aren't the answer, anyone know of any vitamin/herbal/homeopathic treatment that might work? I'm desperate!

I have a lot of experience with neck problems. I can give you some suggestions that won't help you now but will hopefully help you resolve the problem.
Your neck spasms can be a result of damaged ligaments in your neck. If the ligaments aren't holding your spine properly, your muscles tense up in an effort to stablize the joint. Often times you get spasms in a trigger area. If this is the case, no amount of chiro adjustments are going to solve the problem in the long-term. Prolotherapy injections to stablize the joint is the long-term answer. (www.prolotherapy.com)
Does th chiropractor adjust the ATLAS BONE? If he/she says, "yeah, sure, the atlas gets adjusted too", don't buy it. The Atlas adjustment is very specific and requires a special technique. 1 Atlas adjustment has taken 4 years of stiffness out of my neck. Find a chiro that specifically adjusts the atlas bone. This bone is responsible for keeping the whole spine in alignment. If it is off, you are off.
As far as vitamins go, there is little that will do any good on its own. If you do the vitamin/prolo treatments, you will get much better results. To heal your soft-tissue, try these suggestions:
1. Glucosamine - 1500mg
2. Chondroitin - 1200mg
3. MSM - 1000-6000mg per day
4. Hydrolyzed collagen protein - 10g
5. L-Proline (collagen is one-third L-proline)
6. L-Cysteine
7. Vitamin C
8. Grapeseed extract - 200mg
9. Pure Water - 64oz.
After prolo treatments, do not use ice. Get in a really hot shower and cover the area in heat several times a day. It's ice that inhibits healing and heat that induces it.
Do not take anti-inflammatories during prolo.
Inflammtion = Healing
I think these offer quick long-term solutions to your problems (if they are indeed caused by what I suggested)
Good luck

Thank you for your response - I was beginning to think that nobody had read my post! I only occasionally have this specific type of spasm in my neck, and this one I believe was brought on by my workout last Tuesday. I think I was tensing my neck muscles during certain exercises, thus the spasm.
I will research the prolotherapy, and also ask my chiro if she adjusts my atlas bone. I know once last year I had a similar spasm, and she did an adjustment that was strange, to say the least. She had a difficult time doing it, and in fact called her husband in (who is also a chiro) to do the adjustment on me. It was amazing how the pain instantly went away. The adjustment she did on me on Friday was not the same.
As far as vitamins go, I'm already taking everything on your list with the exception of the collagen protein and the L-Proline (I didn't list all the vitamins/minerals I take daily in my original post, because the list is LONG). And my chiro taught me long ago to drink LOTS of water daily.
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post - I appreciate any suggestions I can get at this point. The spasm isn't quite as bad today, but is still bad enough to greatly limit my activity.
Thanks again,
Sara

Hi, Sara.
This, too, shall pass. But, in the meantime, heat, followed by gentle massage and range of motion exercise, will do the most good IF you do not limit your range of movement to what does not hurt.
A few questions:
1. How long have you been doing your SR, how often and how did you certify that it was working?
2. How did you injure your neck? If there was no injury, this is just muscle spasm.

Walt,
I've been doing SR for I guess a couple of years now. I know I have a spasm - I did not injure my neck. I will try the heat, I plan to go tomorrow for a massage, and I have been doing stretching exercises to the point of pain (but not unbearable).
I think what is aggravating all of this is that I believe I have a mineral deficiency - I have been on chelation therapy for mercury toxicity since December, and it removes calcium, magnesium, etc. along with the mercury. I supplement at very high levels on the days off the DMSA (the protocol is 3 days on the DMSA, then 4 days off), but my body never seems to recover. My doctor recently told me that I could go on a protocol of 3 days on the DMSA and 11 days off, which sounds better, although will just take longer to remove the mercury.
On top of all this I have fibromyalgia, which is why I recently started the exercise program. My doctor is hoping that once the mercury is out of my body, the fibromyalgia will improve.
I know that time is the answer for muscle spasms, but when you're in the middle of one that is unresponsive to even Percocet, it's very frustrating!
Thanks for your response - it's good to hear from you again. BTW, how are YOU feeling these days?

Hi, Sara.
I am doing just fine. Thank you.
IF you have been doing the SR twice a day, and it is working (Have you checked it with biofeedback?), there is no way that you should have fibromyositis OR have a persistent muscle spasm.

Walt,
I verified the SR with biofeedback. The fibro started in 1994 when I was in a car accident. I had gotten it under control with your help, but started having problems again when I had a crown replaced last August. There was amalgam under the old crown, and the dentist didn't use a dental dam when drilling. I remember spitting out lots of amalgam during the procedure, and I hate to think how much I swallowed, but didn't think much of it at the time. In the months following, my symptoms return with a vengance, baffling me AND my doctor. It took until November before I finally put the pieces of the puzzle together, with the help of my doctor, and he immediately ordered a 24-hour urine test for mercury.
I have been battling the fibro symptoms once again since then. The chelation has been tough, but I continue with it because of the mercury levels. However, it does play havoc with magnesium and calcium levels. I figured that was at least a contributing factor in the spasm (and other spasms I've had), since the problems coincide with the start of chelation.
Glad to hear you're doing fine - take care!

Thanks, Sara.
Your post just emphasizes how chronic conditions are all "multifactorial".
I would be interested in your retesting your SR with biofeedback since as we change so does the effectiveness of our individual techniques.
Glad to hear that you are getting rid of the mercury since you sound like one of those who are hypersensitive to it.
