Dear Walt,
Recently I posted a message on this board about playing with Mercury as a child. I received several responses, one of which seemed like a person was just trying to scare me. I understand the hazards of mercury toxicity. Have been doing much reading about it lately, and am finding conflicting results. I was 7-8 years old when I played with it, 2-3oz bottle over the period of a few weeks, then it spilled in the carpet, we vacuumed it up (telling you this incase you didn't read my 1st post) I have since found out from one site the there are 3 types of mercury, and that the silver liquid is called elemental mercury, and while the vapors are toxic, it is not as dangerous as some make it out to be. Is this true? Also one man said testing can be $6-10,000, one said $140. My other question is how long will it stay in your system after exposure (I did not ingest it). I am now 30yrs, so this took place 22-23yrs ago. Also since I have a few silver amagam fillings, I will probably test positive anyway right? Is there a way to tell the difference between? Is there a detection level that differs with the amout of mercury in your system from fillings, and from large exposure? (yes, I do understand that no level of mercury is acceptable, I am trying to differentiate if possible). Also is there really a link to EBV titers and mercury exposure, or is this just because the majority of people who have fillings have silver amalgam?? Now I am so mixed up over everything, it seems like every time I read something, it contradicts the last one I read. I've read that mercury leaves you system quickly if not ingested, and I've read it never leaves unless chelated...I've also read conflicting articles about cleaning up mercury, some use hazmat, some say if it's small use a plastic bag, a credit card and a penny. I've even read that some people sprinkle it through their house in religious practices. Everything I read is conflicting, even the medical sites, please help!!! One thing has been consistant throughout, the vapors are toxic, and do not vaccuum, that's all I'm getting. Surely there must be more than 3 labs in the entire US that can test for mercury. What do you recommend???~~~~~~Celena

I'll answer what I can without assaulting you with my opinions.
About vacuuming up mercury. This is a pretty dangerous thing to do. You can read the EPA's statement on mercury cleanup.
Like you said, there are 3 general types of mercury: organic mercury compounds, inorganic mercury componuds, and metallic mercury. Metallic is the least dangerous of the three, but it is still extremely toxic. The main thing about metallic mercury is it is not harmful when swallowed as opposed to the other two types, but that is irrelevant here.
That's about all I can say without someone jumping on me :)

You were dealing with metallic mercury, the least dangerous of the three types.

In lab conditions mercury is stored in glass cylinders and topped with oils to prevent evaporation.
The most dangerous in room temperature are mercury vapors, as they methylate.
If you want to get more info call 1 (800) 35 NIOSH, ask publications and order the all "custom data" on mercury.
Within 10 days (at NO cost to you) they will send you enough info to make you sit down and think about garbage posted by the King who is studying human aggravation!
Seeing is believing!

Hi, Celena.
I am not an expert on mercury toxicity. I just know enough about it to know that is is a big problem. I had all of MY amalgams removed more than 20 years ago.
Go to the horse's mouth (Hal Huggins, DDS, PhD, at (800) 331-2303 or to his website that was just listed on this 'site within the past week. I thought I had put it in my rolodex but I did not do so. I did think to archive it but it will not be archived until about 6 weeks from now.
Let us know what you learn.

I believe that MAI knows more about this than I do.

Dear Dr. Stoll, you are not the only one, as there was a Gag order" imposed by "special interests" to conceal the effects of mercury poisoning.
To much money on line, and deception was mor important than paymants as result of liability.
At present time we have first sign of "reaction" as information could not be concealed any more as Internet power alowed for open communication.
The websites like yours are a great benefit were people can finally read the testimonials of victims, as well as see the real scientific data which was concealed from doctors and from them.
Up to recently only anecdotal hear say or rumors were the main source of information.
The special interest tried to silence many including Hal Huggins.
You may notice that Hal Hugins website includes the info on Gulf War Illness as related to mercury.
This "link" was the result of my communication over the phone with Huggins staff in late 1999.
Here is an excellent link to some data on mercury you may be interested with:

I am pounding it over and over as it is a very substantial writ off.
It is a very difficult and complex subject.
The informations for years deliberatelly were concealed from practicing physicians, and there was a deliberate campaign to silence those who know it.
This in retrospect resulted that frequently diagnosis of mercury poisoning were not made and alternate treatments were performed for other conditions further poisoning menly with medication which made it even worse.

I know a lot about mercury, however still NOT enough.
Yes Dr. You know also a lot about it, as much as you were allowed to know when in medical school and later by deliberate misinformations in professional medical journals.
The collusion and deliberate concealing of substantial scientific material evidence by special interests for years was purely crinminal.

Thanks, MAI.
This coverup is gonna change once the ADA loses a few multimillion $ lawsuits. Unfortunately, those honest dentists who lost their licenses trying to tell the truth will still have been destroyed for their honesty and caring for their patient's welfare.
