Magnesium IVs

Posted by Happygal on June 10, 2002 at 08:34:35:

Good Morning Walt,

I'm still working on obtaining Magnesium IVs.

1. Are there any double blind studies or references I can provide an MD who wishes to make sure they are safe? (I understand they have to take responsibility for doing it and need to feel comfortable about it.)

2. Are there any other practitioners besides MDs who can order IVs?

Thanks so much, Happygal

Hi! Sorry to cut in here, and I think I remember your posting about this topic before, but I can't believe you are having so much trouble with getting a doc to administer Mag IV's. I had three holistic docs give them to me, two of the docs were in PA and one is in CA where I am now. Where are you living? Maybe I missed something in the posts, so I apologize for jumping in here like this. Is it that your doc won't do it or you can't find one? Aren't there any holistic doctors in your area? The IV usually consists of magnesium and vitamins. It's called a certain kind of "cocktail". I forget the name exactly. And no, I don't think a non- M.D. can do it, although I know of a dentist who does chelation therapy. Sorry you are having such a problem with something that for me was so easy to obtain. Good luck in your quest!

Naya.

I just found your previous post, so I guess everything I said here is irrelevant. That's what I get for not doing my homework, (ha, ha). Just wanted to help.

Hi, Happygal.

The MDs, DOs and dentists have a monopoly on anything that "breaks the skin".

Go to your local medical school library and have them do a search for an English PhD who wrote the definitive text about magnesium about 10 years ago. She is considered the world authority. This is not the first time I have wished that I had filed her name and the name of her definitive text. I just assumed that, because she was considered the world authority, everyone would have the reference. Silly me!

When you find it please let me know. This time I will file it where I can find it.

Hi Walt,

Fortunately I'm able to search for the book by phone.

The reference librarian couldn't do the search, she needs more information to find it. She wondered, "Is the word 'Magnesium' in the title"? Is the book limited to the topic of magnesium, or is it about a broader topic such as clinical nutrition or electrolytes? Is it very technical or clinical? Any other information about why that particular book?

Here's a few titles I pulled off Amazon.com - Do any of these sound familiar?

Magnesium Deficiency: Physiopathology and Treatment Implications - MJ Halpern, J Durlach (ed) 1986

Magnesium in Cellular Processes and Medicine by BM Altura, Et al, 1987

Magnesium Deficiency in the Pathogenesis of Disease: Early Roots of Cardiovascular, Skeletal and Renal Abnormalities by Mildred S. Seelig, 1980.

Thanks, Walt.

Hi Naya!

Thanks for your message. So far, I approached the two MDs in my town (Boulder, CO) who I have actually met. I sent them faxes with the info about the Magnesium IVs and I received thoughtful responses from each.

The first one wants to do the Meyers Cocktail so I figure I can't talk to him again without more information, hence I'm asking Walt for that.

The second one was not actually a holistic MD but since I met her at a meditation retreat I thought she might be open to it. She said she used magnesium with a pregnant patient and it induced labor, so she didn't feel she knew enough and she referred me back to the office of the first MD.

My next attempt will be to fax the basic information to holistic MDs who I have never met. I would like to know if they are even open to the idea before I go in (and pay probably several hundred dollars) for an office visit. Hopefully this will be a good way to find out.

About how much did you pay? The first MD wants about $60 for each infusion. Other avenues I tried wanted even more money, including an office visit and lab tests. I'm wishing I could "shop around" and get a better price. I'm wondering what is the going rate.

Naya, did you just go in and do an office visit with those 3 holistic MDs you worked with? Or did you know in advance that they would do it? Did the Meyers cocktail seem to help you?

Boulder is the "Alternative Healing Capital" of the United States, so I should be able to find someone to do it here with a little searching. The other question however, is the cost. $500 - $800 seems high to me, so far that's what I'm facing.

Thanks, Naya!

Best wishes, Happygal Jan

Hi! I was in treatment with all three docs for CFS which I've had for about ten years. Actually two were M.D.'s and one ws a D.O., now that I remember better. As I said, I was seeing them regularly over the years of my illness and the first one suggested the Meyer's cocktails, (yep, now I recall the name), as a way of boosting my energy and getting some vitamins into me, since the oral route was making me sick. I' really sorry I don't recall the price; the IVs may have been covered by my insurance, so that's probably why I don't remember. Of course, the CFS has had quite an effect on my memory generally.
After my first doc left his practice, I went on to another one whom I asked for the same IV and when I moved out to California, the holistic doctor I'm seeing now also offers all kinds of IV treatments. So, that was my experience with it. Again, I am really sorry to see that you're having so much of a hassle trying to get this done for you. I hope you succeed in finding someone soon.
Oh, I almost forgot,(LOL), yes they did help me, but only for a day or two after each administration and ultimately I had to stop them because the magnesium started to really knock me out. I have a very sensitive system which seems to have gotten moreso and I have trouble tolerating just about any kind of treatments or supplements now. But I did tolerate them for years with success.

Thanks, Happygal.

I am sure that Mildred S. Selig is the name I remember.

I would be interested in what Halpern & Durlach have to say as well.

I REALLY appreciate your digging this up for me.
