Hy/others-where to purch magnesium

Posted by Lak on March 07, 2003 at 15:17:41:

Hello...
Dr. Stoll recommended I take 1000mg of elemental magnesium 2x per day. He recommended either aspartate, orotate or glycinate. My problem is-I have only found elemental magnesium as oxide(I think oxide is right). I've tried natural food stores and the internet. I did find a product by Shaklee, but it was combined w/calcium and to get enough magnesium w/the Shaklee pill I would get way to much calcium. So, all this being said-does anyone know of a company that has an "elemental" magnesium product that is either aspartate, orotate or glycinate.
Thanks,

The Vitamin Shoppe carries Solgar's Chelated Magnesium, which is mg. glycinate.

Metagenics makes a good mag glycinate. Available from various vendors on the net; my local HFS also carries it.

Lak.

There is "elemental" magnesium in every product! for example, in MgO (magnesium oxide) the actual amount of magnesium in each molecule is the atomic weight of magnesium (12 [see the periodic table of elements]) is combined with the atomic weight of oxygen (16). That means that of this molecule 12/28ths (the combined weights of the elements in this molecule is 28) is magnesium. So, if the lable says 1000 milligrams of magnesium oxide, that 12/28ths of that is the elemental magnesium.

Of course MgO is not absorbed orally so the effective elemental magnesium in that tablet is zero.

Magnesium glycinate, for exsample, is a much more complex molecule. Glycemic acid is combined with each atom of magnesium to make it more absorbable. Glycine has 8 carbon atoms, 13 hydrogen atoms, 3 nitrogen atoms and 4 oxygen atoms. To make it an acid, so it could combine with the Mg molecule, would require at least an OH addition. Add all those atomic weights up and you will see that the elemental weight of the magnesium in this molecule is a very small % of the total.

This is why all really good companies put the elemental amount of the active ingredient on the lable and why you will find it is a very unusual store owner who can help you with this. You can vote with your dollars by only buying lables who do this for you.

Hope this helps.

Walt
