Dr. Stoll about magnesium tests

Posted by Steven [280.62] on December 03, 2003 at 10:02:49:

hey doc,

I thought u would like to know that I id my first progressive relaxation session this morning like 10 minutes after i woke up. I checked the archives regarding biofeedback but this isn't an option for me due to cost. Besides, the ones from radio shack are cheaper yet I read u saying that they aren't good enough.

I contacted MVL about the intracelleular magnesium test. They told me that since I live in NY state that due to some law (which of course only applies here) they could not ship the kit here. It would have to go to another state and the blood has to be shipped from this outside state as well. Does anything ever come normally for me lol? I looked into some holistic docs but they charge too much to do this. As a reminder, this is for my PVC's. Also, how would I know if I somehow had the results if my level was low, as there isn't a range for normal (according to the archives)? Thanks.

Hi Steven,

Congratulations on your first SR session! I used the glossary description of the "relaxation response" to help me know that I was getting relaxed enough by doing the SR. (I did get biofeedback later, just to be sure, and I was right that I was getting relaxed enough.) Anyway, you can tell by the description in the glossary that you are doing okay, after you've done your practice for a while.

Best wishes,
Happygal

Thanks, Steven.

Listen to Happygal.

Regarding the magnesium: the most accurate way to determine symptomatic levels of deficiencies is by using your personal bodymind laboratory anyhow: does it help or not?

In this circumstance, I would find a good company: one that puts on the lable the elemental amount of magnesium in each tablet, and be sure it is glycinate, orotate, or aspartate.

Take a couple of grams of magnesium daily for a week or so and see what happens.

Let us know.

Walt

How soon after starting the SR would I know I was reaching? I did 2 times yesterday and once today so far. I'm doing the progressive relaxation portion but I have to say, it was more comfy doing it lying down than sitting up since keeping my arms and legs relaxed are harder in the seat. Is that OK? I really don't feel much during the session except a couple of things. I feel like my body is moving a bit when im not actually doing that. Also, the breathing at the end gives me a slight head rush. Does all this sound like I am right on track?

I bought one of these magenesium things a couple of months ago. It is by KAL and is Magnesium 400 (2 tablets according to the serving size). I can't swallow these (still have hat swallowing problem) so is breaking them up OK? No side effects? With food? Time of day? All at once (the 2 grams)?

In terms of the lab, I really wanted to get the test done but having to get the blood taken, then going to another state to mail it, is a big pain. I wouldn't even know how to keep the blood OK. It couldn't even be mailed to me but had to be to someone in another state, which would mean the name on the test would have to be their's too. I don't know why this is so difficult for me.

Hi Stephen,

Sounds like you're on the right track -- just keep practicing! After you do this two times every day for a while, your awareness will increase. You'll notice how each session is a bit different and then you will start to figure out what relaxation really feels like!

Best wishes,
Happygal

The only thing I feel right is sore in the muscles I tense. Also, is it OK to do it lying down. I tried it 2 times in chairs and it wasn't as comfy. During the session, I don't know what I feel. I'm not sure if I even feel anything. Occasionally, it's so quiet that I feel my PVC's a bit. Lastly, I'm using a tape I bought a while ago rather than making my own (from the book b/c of the laughing problem). It's kind of similar with a couple of differences. Some of the relaxation portions are shorter, some are longer). Is it all the same thing basically?

Hi Steven,

Some people like to lay down or sit in a recliner. For me, sitting up or in a recliner work best. Some fall asleep if they lay down. You have to find what works for you so feel free to experiment and do what is comfortable for you.

About what you feel, just take your time. The more you do this, the easier it gets. It's just relaxation. There's really nothing to do. Quiet is good, and it's okay to feel whatever is there, whether it is tension or pvcs or a kind of settling in, or whatever is there.

Making your own tape sounds like a good idea. Do what works.

Sounds to me like you are on the right track. Keep experimenting and you will have different experiences and begin to learn what is working for you.

Best wishes,
Happygal

I think you may have misread my comment.

I didn't make my own tape. I am using an already made tape I bought through my old gastro years ago. It is almost identical to the book except for some minor differences. I'm not sure if the tensing and relaxing times are the same (have not timed them).

I have done it sitting in a chair and lying down, depending on when I last ate. Finding a time is very tough as I get on the treadmill as soon as I get up (5 days a week), then I have to eat when I'm done. After that, I shower and then do the relaxation. In the afternoon, I do it before dinner. On off cardio days (2 days per week), I do it right after I wake up and again, before dinner. I eat every 2-3 hours so it's tough to do this any other way. I also do cardio 5 times a week and then go to the gym later in the day 3 times a week. Yes, I exercise a lot :)

In terms of how i feel, sometimes it feels like a real chore to do, especially having to do it 2 times. I have a concentration problem so doing it in a quiet place is my only way to go but it's tough to do 2 times every single day. Combining that with the exercise I do, PLUS the strengthening exercises once every day for my knees and shoulders and this takes up a lot of time.

Hi Steven,

If it feels like a chore, that's probably a sign that SR will be very beneficial for you. Dr. Stoll always says that often the thing we need to do the most is the one thing we put off until last.

It sounds like you're moving in a good direction with the SR. Keep on!

Best wishes,
Happygal
