Magnesium testimonial & question

Posted by Jennifer [18.209] on March 28, 2004 at 11:57:27:

My mother had been on Ziac, I believe it's a beta blocker, for years. She has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure for years and years. She had also been taking a diuretic furosemide. Last week the Dr. took her off the Ziac and put her on an additional diuretic to try to get the swelling out of her feet/legs. She started having palpitations, dizziness, racing heart and her blood pressure went from 120/80 to 144/87. I got her some magnesium yesterday, and within hours her blood pressure dropped to 120 again and no other symptoms. This morning her blood pressure is 105/78!!! Amazing! The stuff is good!!

Could the additional diuretic cause her blood pressure to go up or was it most likely magnesium deficiency? Could lack of magnesium actually cause her heart not to efficiently pump the blood from her legs and possibly she doesn't have heart failure, or perhaps even high blood pressure?

Hi Jennifer,

I can't answer your questions, but I know that doing ankle pumps (exercise) can help reduce the swelling in feet and lower legs. If your mom is able to do this, have her sit and lift feet off the floor slightly, then just alternately point the toes and lift them up toward the legs. If it's easier, she can do just one foot at a time. Several times a day is good, or any time she thinks of it or is bothered by the swelling.

Hope you find your answers!

Thanks, Jennifer.

Remember that ALL diuretics tend to waste minerals. Also listen to Nutmeg and do not forget the gentle use of rebounding.

She used to be a really heavy drinker. She was diagnosed over 20 years ago with congestive heart failure because of the edema. Is it possible that she just needed magnesium to get her heart to pump normally again since she depleted the mag with alcohol? I would have thought she would have been dead by now if it truly were heart failure.
