I have read through the archives on magnesium but still have one specific question. Exactly why is magnesium hard to absorb when the intercellular level of Mg is low in the body?
What are the mechanics of absorption that are going on? And what can one do about it?
If you cannot absorb oral Mg and injections are unavailable, is there any way to get Mg into the body?? Any good info would be appreciated from anyone.
Thanks, WildCard

We give my son baths with two cups Epsom salts. The first night he had it, he slept all night. Previously he had been waking up every night for six months at least. He is 11 and has malabsorption problems (celiac).
Try two cups for at least 20 minutes.

Hi, Wild.
To my knowledge, no one knows.

One possible approach to correct this is to increase magnesium's natural syngergists, and reduce it's natural antagonists. Here is the breakdown:
Magnesium Synergists:
Chromium, zinc, boron, CoQ10, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, [calcium, Vit D], insoluble fiber.
Magnesium Antagonists / Inhibitors:
Sodium, potassium, iron, selenium, copper, lithium, silicon / silica, manganese, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin E, niacin / niacinamide, PABA, Vitamin K, folate, choline, uric acid, alcohol, [calcium, Vitamin D].
With regard to the antagonists, I wouldn't look to eliminate unnatural amounts of them from the diet, but I would look at potential symptoms for excess amounts of particular ones, which could be part of the problem.

Cool! Come to think of it someone mentioned foot soaking (?) as a way to absorb Mg. Do you think it would work sublingually?

HI Wild,
All I know is that too much of it in your stomach becomes a laxative.
Under the tongue would not hurt to try. It is doubtful
that you would get it in sufficient quantities that way.
Good luck..

I would take a bath for at least 20 minutes. Soak in a hot tub for 20 minutes with two cups of Epsom salts. Epsom salts are magnesium, I believe and your body can absorb some of it. I'd take at least 4 Epsom salt baths per week.
While you are in the tub, practice total relaxation techniques. I put a towel on my chest & keep dipping it in the warm water.
good luck.
