elemental magnesium

Dr. Stoll,

I have read everything in your archives, etc. about magnesium deficiencies. I am trying to correct a deficiency, and understand perfectly that I may not be able to do this orally, but I will try this before finding a doctor to do the IV. My question is this:
I am trying to find a product that lists the amount of Elemental Magnesium it contains. None in my health food store do, and I can't find any on the internet. I was taking KAL magnesium glycinate, but this product does not indicate how much elemental magnesium there is. I would like to purchase a product that has this listed on the label. Also, does the amount of elemental magnesium per 100 mg. of magnesium glycinate ever change, or would this be the same for any magnesium glycinate product.
Another question: My health food store recommends a liquid "ionic" magnesium. Do you know anything about the absorbability of such a product, or how much magnesium it would provide in this form?
Thank you so much for your time.

Anne Marie

Hi ann marie,

I have only found two that I feel certain have the elemental magnesium on the label -- although the label doesn't say "elemental magnesium." They are metagenics and designs for health. Metagenics can usually only be purchased from a health care provider. I'm not sure about designs for health. We are fortunate where I live to have an integrative pharmacy and I can get them there.

The pharmacist there says you can kind of tell by the weight of the contents in the bottle. The ones with elemental magnesium are heavier.

Hope this helps,
Jan

Hi, Ann Marie.

The way to figure it out for yourself is to know the formula of the product and then look up the atomic weights and calculate how much if that is magnesium. Any knoledgeable health food store owner should know that and be able to figure it out. Listen to Happygal--although I doubt one can figure it out by how "heavy" it is. Actually, the element magnesium is pretty light (see the atomic weight chart included in all dictionaries). Usually the molecule it is chelated to weighs more than the magnesium.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Hi Anne Marie,

If it's not given on the label, you should be able to call or e-mail the company to find out how much elemental magnesium is in each capsule or tablet. Use the e-mail address on the website or bottle label, or look for a toll-free number on the label. Of course that would not be very helpful if you wanted to compare brands in the store.
