Q about Magnesium...if you are deficient, why do you need an IV sometimes?

It seems to me, that like thirst, if you "need" water, your body uses it.
Of course, I'm not counterdebating this; just asking.
Why if someone needs magnesium won't any old (or a chelate form) be absorbed?
Does your body not KNOW it needs it?
Why is it that you need the IV of this, but not Vitamin C or Calcium, etc?
Please someone explain this...

Michele, as I understand it, magnesium deficiency inhibits the body's ability to absorb magnesium. So it is one of those catch-22s. Why does this happen? We aren't really sure, but my guess is it has to do with adrenal function. Hope this helps.

Thanks...

But that means anyone who is nutritionally deprived is simply up the creek without a paddle if they don't get an IV?

I think that over time, the body MUST accept the Mag... I just don't see how it doesn't?

Hi, Michele.

I hope this has been archived but here goes: This is an idiosyncracy of magnesium. Once the intracellular level gets low enough to cause symptoms, IN SOME PEOPLE, the intestinal lining loses it's ability to absorb magnesium efficiently. The IVs are to get the body over that hump so that it can be absorbed orally again.
