magnesium and constipation...Dr. Stoll

Posted by Jen [3666.1600] on May 10, 2005 at 07:43:31:

Hi,
I have been taking magnesium glycinate supplements. After reading a lot about it on this website, I felt it would benefit me. I seem to be sleeping better and I am not as constipated. I am concerned because after reading some information on constipation, you had mentioned habits and not forming them. Does this mean the magnesium is a bad idea? I am starting to exercise and reading the stress and relaxation workbook to start those exercises. I eat high fiber cereal every day.
I just purchased a multi vitamen and in the past these caused constipation. Do you think the extra mag can keep that from becoming a problem on the vitamen? Or maybe my vitamens in the past werent quality and that is what caused constipation?
Thanks for reading...Jennifer

What causes any minor straining when bowel movements arent even hard?
What do healthy bowel movements look like? Does what we eat make them look a lot different? Like high fiber cereals?
I feel very weird asking these questions so thanks for your patience.

Jen,

A magnesium tablet often contains filler or some sort of coating and other stuff to help absorbtion. A good make will tell you how much of actual magnesium is contained without the rest. This is called "elemental" magnesium.

elemental?

Dr. Stoll and Maz,
The brand I bought is KAL as i read it was good in the archives. IT says it has 400 mg of magnesium glycinate, and the other ingredients are cellulose, stearic Acid, and magnesium stearate. The bottle "guarantees" that NO other ingrediants other than those listed are in it.
Is it safe to take them every day?
Thank you for your patience...Jen

Jen,

Always go to the archives and the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

Jen,

Most of the 400 milligrams in that tablet is the glycinate and only a little is magnesium. If it does not say how much elemental in in each tablet I would switch brands. The health food store owner can do the calculation for you but the exact way to do it is in the archives. It is complicated to explain and that is why I do not retype it here.

Let us know what you learn. The odds are that you could take at least 10 of these twice a day without any negative effect.

Walt

Ok, I will read more on it. I will get another brand at the store. I will post later once I learn more and change brands.
Thanks for your help.
