Magneium orotate vs magnesium citrate

Hi there,

I wonder if you could clear something up for me please:

I read in one book that magnesium orotate or aspartate was the way to go. However, they come in such small quantities of ACTUAL elemental magnesium that it seems that you must take many many capsules (up to 30!) a day to get a proper dosage of say 400-600 mg of mag/day. Is this so?

Secondly, I have just been speaking to a nutritionist about this problem - he says that mag orotate is 'becoming a thing of the past' - research having shown that it absorbs quickly but doesn't reach the cells properly. He says that mag citrate is a better way to go - absorbable and full of elemental mag in each capsule. However, I have read that mag citrate is inorganic nd not at all absorbable by the body... which is correct??

I have read that magnesium glycinate is the best absorbed (don't mean to add to the confusion). I don't know the actual answer to your question. It was my understanding that either magnesium glycinate or magnesium asporotate were highly assimilable. Solaray markets Magnesium Asporotate which is composed of Magnesium Aspartate, Magnesium Citrate, & Magnesium Orotate. Dr. Stoll has commented on magnesium numerous times in the archives (link below).

Magnesium Citrate is used as a laxative BECAUSE it is not absorbed. The story about orotate not being utilized even though it is absorbed is gobbledegook. I would REALLY be interested in any double blind studies showing that the chelated magnesium that is absorbed does not get into the cells.

I have read through the magnesium archives that I have found by doing a search - they give a lot of info.

I am still wondering, however, about dosage. I am not 100% sure (have been taking it for 4 days now), but I THINK that I am absorbing at least some of the magnesium orotate (sorry to be disgusting, but stools not as often or as loose as with another brand of chelated magnesium.) I am taking 10 little pills each morning which still only give me 325mg of elemtal magnesium. The pack says to only take one or two per day - I don't think there will be any value in this.

SO my question finally, when taking magnesium orotate.. am I correct in taking so many pills every day? It seems like a lot and the cost is high too.

Loose stools are a function of how much is NOT being absorbed. It is hard to take too much of magnesium. Were this me, I would probably be taking 20 tablets a dose.

You might look into magnesium glycinate. The cost might be less and the absorbtion would be at least as good. Eventually, when your problem is gone, you may find that a maintainence dose would be MUCH less.
