Dear Dr. Stoll,
Your website and bb have been so informative and helpful to me! I have a question about magnesium, since I've been reading Durlach's papers. He seems to distinguish between Mg deficit (not enough Mg being absorbed into the system) and Mg depletion (some type of systemic, biochemical dysregulation that results in not enough Mg available). Mg deficit can be solved by taking in more Mg, either orally, or (I'm assuming) intravenously or intramuscularly. But with Mg depletion, it sounds like Durlach is saying that taking in more Mg isn't going to solve the problem... whatever's causing the underlying dysregulation(s) has to be fixed (and I gather we don't know how to do this yet, more research needed). And it sounds like some kind of dysregulation is the cause for most cases of chronic lack of Mg in the body. So, to get to my point and my question...why do you advocate Mg supplementation (either orally or IV or IM) across the board? I realize that it can't hurt, but, if it's Mg depletion that you're dealing with, how is taking in more Mg going to solve the problem, if some kind of dysregulation is causing the Mg not be able to be utilized by the body? Am I misunderstanding something? Thanks for your help.

this sorta sounds like me with zinc and cod liver oil.
They helped me when i took them right when needed, zinc
for muscle aches and cod for sharp knee pains. They both
worked within minutes relieving what they did but taking
them when not needed they didn't do a thing for the pains
from the activities that they helped. The sharp knee pains
left years ago and new dull ones that weren't constant and
muscle aches were fixed with different brands of MSM and
they didn't need to be taken long or often so whatever
the cause was it left. Good to find something that helps the
pains but Great to find something that Elimates them...

Hi, Cindy.
Both mechanisms are certainly operating in different people! Both may even be operating in some people. However, as you have said, taking too much magnesium is not likely to be harmful AND changing the disregulation of magnesium metabolism is still in it's infancy........ The Human Genome Project will eventually tell us how to prop up those with dysregulation.
This 'site is not meant to cover ALL of the bases since no one yet even knows "all the bases". It is meant to open doors and give people resources to pursue their own problem.
I DO appreciate your bringing this up though. It is wonderful to see all the research going on in this area after so many years of the allopaths scoffing at it's very existance as a common problem.
Namaste`
